Hi, guys... I haven't been around here for a while, but I have a favor to ask
if anyone has any ideas. My fiance has a relative who has been living on the
streets up until recently. He has some mental problems, mostly phobias and
such, but he is having a lot of pain with his teeth and needs to see a dentist
as soon as possible.
He also has very little money and is living with his mother, although he is in
his 30s.
Any ideas where I can send him to get his teeth treated? I don't know what the
problem is exactly, but I suspect he has not been brushing for years and
probably has lots of things going on in there.
I know if anybody can help, it will be you wonderful folks.
By the way, this young man has agreed to go to a psychiatrist to get his mental
issues treated as well, but will only do so after getting his painful teeth
taken care of.
Hope you can help! All ideas happily accepted.
Best regards,

Hi Andrea,
It's been a while.
If you may recall, I do a little dental work in the local psych facility.
The way it works there is; anyone receiving treatment for their mental health
qualifies for treatment for dental health. All they require is a referral or
request for treatment from one of the various mental health programs. Fees are
based on financial situation. From what you describe this individual might
qualify for free dentistry up here, or possibly be requested to make a very
modest donation to cover a portion of the materials. (e.g. $100 to cover a full
mouth restoration - exam, x-rays, extractions, fillings, cleaning and partial
dentures.
The young man might want to reconsider what treatment he starts first. They can
and do run concurrently.
Check out your local Mental Health association or intake department of your
local Mental Health facility.

Pity that he has these priorities, but undestandable... I can't see him
sitting down and having a meaningful discussion with a psych if he's in
pain....
I would suggest getting him enough medication to control any dental
phobias (Ativan should be enough, I would think) and go with him up to
the dental school. They will treat him well without emptying his pocket
book so fast. Of course, they will be limited by time and technical
skills, but it would be a good initial start.
Then if the Profs are any good, they might be able to recommend some
community program where local dentists contribute some time on a
rotating basis. These things do exist, but are often not widely
advertised, and also tend to be more palliative then real dental
surgeries, but again, if you want to get the teeth that are hurting out
or root canaled, that's what I'd do.
Keep in mind that if he does need medication to stay cooperative, he'll
need accompaniement to and from the appointments.
Hope it works out
