Manic, full moon and full denture

Roy Brown - 28 Nov 2004 15:37 GMT Wish my digital camera was working last night (dead batteries). I had an walk in emergency repair at the end of the day. With company coming for dinner in about an hour. You probably won't believe me. It was one of those priceless shots you occasionally see in the seminars of DIY dentistry.
As you know, we were pretty close to a full moon. I had a middle aged women walk in with a full upper denture in the mouth and two centrals in her hand wanting them put back onto her denture. It only took a minute or so to figure out she was quite obviously manic and off medications. She told me she had done her own repairs previously using nail acrylic and that it had broken off.
What she did not tell me, was that she had modified her denture from 2nd premolar to 2nd premolar using an Exacto knife and nail acrylic. She had taken off each tooth one by one, modified the shape and repositioned it to her liking using nail acrylic. I was not able to find out what she used to pigment the acrylic.
I grabbed my handpiece to prep the denture and the damn thing literally fell apart when I touched the bur to it. 4.5 hours later of incessant whining, 5 try ins, mixing 2 sets of new anteriors, some tooth coloured jet, and a new flange to boot, the patient was finally content with the appearance. She was once an art student so she "understood form and aesthetics" and she once had a friend that was a technician so she "knew how to do denture repairs". Then she complained that the thing was loose and she did not want to use adhesive. I told she would have to come back next week for a reline.
Dinner and company had been waiting quite a while for me to finish this repair and join them. All she had was $60.00 to pay for the service. Sheesh........
So how was your day?

Joel M. Eichen - 28 Nov 2004 15:59 GMT I had one guy who used to modify his own dentures ...... I never got a chance to do anything for him (THANK GOD).
He was too busy buzzing my ear about colloidal silver or something.

Alarm bells not working that day ?
That must be a bargain for $60 Kaannaadiaan dollers right ?
Sorry Roy, can't resist. Perhaps you would have preferred Vulcanite ?

Actually had the audacity to ask if I sell her only the 2 front teeth, if I didn't have the time to do it.

And on a previous day you will meet another willing to take full advantage of your kindness. You should take full advantage of their wallet.
I don't mind helping people in a pinch, I take offence when someone tries to take advantage of my good nature. That is where I draw the line and either get much more expensive or angry or both.
It is those who put us in the win/lose situation that are most irritating. Win/win or lose/lose I can handle those.

Here is the kicker.
The patient just called. Saying that I have destroyed her denture and feels that she has overpaid me for my services.............
Good thing I had a patient in the chair when she called. Forced me to keep my mouth shut. Told her I was with another patient and was unable to deal with her manic condition at the current time.
I am pleased that Kanaadians don't have the right to bear arms. I won't have to explain an untoward outcome to St. Peter.

It is frowned upon in areas with populations of more than a few thousand and considered taboo in areas with populations of a few million. Somewhere in-between is that grey area of law where the stalking laws kick in.

Vaughn
Roy Brown - 29 Nov 2004 02:02 GMT | > | > | If firearms are outlawed, only outlaws will have firearms... | > | [quoted text clipped - 12 lines] | | Vaughn One can own handguns as well. Legal permits are issued for collectors and target shooters. Most of our laws revolve around the care and control of arms. Walking down the street with the butt of a handgun sticking out of your pants or openly carrying a sawed off shotgun will most likely get a little attention from those that uphold the law.

It is pretty much the same here in the United States of Florida except no permits are needed for ownership. (perhaps I should call it double-Bush country)

We can have arms for hunting, yes, but they're supposed to be locked up and broken open. Hunting arms are about the only weapons we can have... unless you want to count carving knives and such. I don't really think it's much different from the Exited States.... I mean, you all can't go around with side arms and submachine guns over the shoulder, now ... can you... ?... SP

Oh, you mean out in the open? I don't think there's any law against that here, altho it may get you some funny looks.. then again thinking about this city, maybe not.

Less time, materials, and all that other rubbish.
Overpaid huh? Next time charge an arm and a leg, literally. For emergency service that will cost an eye too, as extra cost.
Merchant of Venice anyone ?

Now that I have reasonable doubt as to this individuals mental competency, I can refuse further treatment until an office of the Provincial government declares the individual to be mentally competent. Roy, there is no doubt in my mind that you were nothing but totally diplomatic and polite through the whole thing. I do think, however, that you need to lock your front door an hour before you want to close up shop, and speak to these types through an intercom. Then medico-legally you are covered. This is not the type of person you want referring work to you any way... Sorry it had to happen to you. But as you know, we've all been there in one form or another. SP

Do you tell the patient there will be a minimum of fee of $100 for a walk-in repair, perhaps higher? You can change the $100 to whatever applied in your office. If you force them to come up with cash or credit card prior to looking in the mouth, you get rid of most of those people who are looking to take advantage of good hearted professionals. Especially on a Holiday weekend. .. Stephen Mancuso, D.D.S. Troy, Michigan, USA
