I'm writing this on behalf of a friend (toronto, single male, 36) who is
considering buying personal dental insurance. He has a low-paying job with no
benefits, and he needs to have a root canal done soon (approx. $1000 cost).
Can he get some sort of dental insurance in short order that'll substantially
cover the cost of the procedure (and any possible future root canals/dental
treatments)? Any specific insurance company recommendations?
Any other tips or advice would be most helpful.
thanks in advance, marko
p.s. one person said to buy some travel health insurance on a future trip and
have the root canal done there claiming it was an "emergency". this seems like
an interesting idea, that is if it's not considered to be fraudulent.

Good question!
Some insurances have al ist of doctos who will do it for the $600 and
they pay 50%.

It will not work!

I really don't understand this concept of dental insurance. It's like
having no auto insurance, then you have an accident, then you buy insurance
to pay for the accident.
1000 is a bit much for a root canal.
I don't know how things work with our good friends to the north, but, in the
states, if one can not pay for that treatment, there are other options.
These should have been discussed if finances are a problem.
Plus, there are other jobs out there with dental benefits.

Yeah, I thought that too until the dental fees skyrocketed. A molar
root canal was around $300-$400 ten years ago ...... or was that 20?
The insurance holds down costs ......
Errrr, fees.

Forget about inflation, and cost of living? Sorry, but everything does need
to go up in cost. I remember that, in the 70's, my dad bought a brand new
Pontiac Grand Prix for 3,500. They cost over 18 K now. They built their
house, property included, for 28,000. Someone can now build the same exact
thing for over 150k.

Pre-existing condition, not usually covered.
>Any specific insurance company recommendations?
Nope they are all pretty much the same.

Insurance companies aren't out to help you. They are out to make sure
that they pay out less money than you send to them in premiums. Skip
the headache of insurance and just pay fee for service.

Right, unless your employer chips in.
And even then don't expect much.

Have your friend call the Univ. of Toronto Dental Clinic. 416-979-4927
They bill at about 50% of the current fee guide.
By the time your friend buys insurance, holds on till the waiting period is
over and pays the deductible. He will probably end up paying at least 50%
with the insurance plus the insurance .
