Whoever just tried to send me an infected email should know that it was
cleaned up before delivery.

Any idea who would have sent that to me?

The file attached to this email was removed because it is infected with
the W32.Beagle@mm!cpl virus.
ares - 17 Nov 2004 02:59 GMT
I've gotten that one recently; could be some sort of email harvester and it
spoofs other people's addresses making it look like they sent it to you when
it was really someone else who got your address from someone's address book
or from the newsgroup.  I didn't open the attachment so I was ok.

--  Howdy Sabra; I just realized something: You're on a Macintosh like
myself and a couple-a others on the SMD... And you-all are running MacOS
X... That's supposed to be relatively impervious to virus and such... So
I don't see how this file could infect you, unless it's specifically
directed to attack Macintoshes. It seems to me the only thing you have
to worry about is passing it on to other recipients in your emails. If
you have Little Snitch, that should catch any unauthorized attempts to
access the Internet by that worm.

Hope this makes sense...

Anyone who endorses the Hell-Ozone and likely has a financial
interest in promoting it, has nothing to say worth listening to IMO.

Gentlemen,

Considering I've been around this newsgroup for a while, having the same
initials as RB.

I would appreciate it if you could find some way to distinguish us as
distinct individuals other than by initials. Your comments really do not
look all that favourable of me.

If all the Steve's here could do it, surely there is a solution.

That would be RB and RBeh.

Or you could refer to the other individual as Bertolotti and let Google
bring some new blood to this group.

I don't really endorse Hell, though, I felt like I've been there a few a
times. I understand from the likes of David Suzuki, that if we don't respect
Ozone, we are going to feel like we are in hell.

I hear you, Roy, and that is actually why I always put Ray Berlotti's
initials as <RB> (sharp parentheses) when referring to his lecture
comments, as I'm well aware that your RB acronym belongs here while <RB>
is not a reg.  In truth, once or twice I may forget, especially in the
body of a posting, but that's why you see the <RB> that way. I'll change
it to RBBD as in Ray Berlotti BondoDontist, then there will be no
confusion. 'Sides; nobody seems interested in hearing about what he had
to say....

But, remember Roy, NOBODY here refers to you as RB, it's always Roy.
Sorry, hope this clears that up.

Nobody, there are a LOT of infected computers out there sending this stuff
out.  The owners are unaware (and irresponsible)

I get these in bunches every few weeks.  Delete and forget it.

Yeah, not to mention that almost always worms like that tend to forge
email headers, so it's nearly impossible to know where the email came
from unless you know what SMTP server everybody who sends you email
uses.

The way it arrived and from whom tells me that I should not be the only
one who would have received this email and attachment.  It's over and
taken care of now.  But this is a little head's up to the group because
it came from within ... no one else is likely to use that particular

Once you have been the target of something sinister, you know the
difference.  I'm no newcomer to the net and I'm not likely to overreact
to ordinary "small stuff".  This is a little different.

Believe me, if someone wanted to target one person in the past, it could
be done.  This is more than likely "ordinary stuff" but a little
curiosity goes with it.

You CANNOT trust the 'From' header of a mass-mailing worm generated
email. It is nearly 100% of the time incorrect.

The only way to determine the 'real' sender is to use the lesser
forged headers.

Yes, mine was from someone on another newsgroup I posted on who wouldn't do
that, so what could be different about the email you got?  It could likely
be from some stranger.

Yes, I think it was from a stranger.  But because the address wasn't
easily harvested ... oh well, it's not a big deal.  But it is
significant for some unspoken subtle reasons.

Thank you for your posts which I know were intended to ease any anxiety
that is related to this "event".

They probably have your email stored in their address book because they have
replied to you via email before ( it was auto-stored upon reply) Now they
have a worm/virus that gets all the addresses it can from the Outlook
address book and sends a copy of itself to all of them. Then, it looks like
they "sent" you an email when you get it.

Have had similiar emails from groups my wife corresponds with.  BTW, I have
an empty address book on OE at work - at home I just gave up - too many

I still get frequent e-mails with infected attachments (though I don't
remember the bagel virus).
My ISP (Earthlink) has a virus blocker I can set, which removes the
attachment before it reaches my mailbox.
Last year I was receiving as much as a hundred or more PER HOUR,
before I had Earthlink set up with virus blocker, and though I had
Norton Antivirus on my PC, I still had to log onto my e-mail account
every couple of hours or the mailbox would get clogged with this crap
and no legit. e-mails would get through.
About the same time, I started to get reports from folks in various
newsgroups I've participated in that they were having the same problem,
so I assume there was some robot harvesting e-mail addresses from usenet.
