Linda - 14 Nov 2004 06:08 GMT I heard a story - maybe a dental urban myth - that an office used to quit early every Friday and have a nitrous party. And then one member of the staff ended up dying from the extended effects of these parties. Linda.

Yes, nitrous oxide does deplete B12 levels, but only if you did a huge amount of it.
I happen to know for a fact that one can breath in a lot of nitrous oxide in a short period of time, even if it's not mixed with oxygen, as long as you remember to breath every so often.

Its another shaggy dog story ... meaning too long for its worth!

Sure enough someone mixed up the tanks and when they thought they were delivering 100% O2, it was really 100% N2O.

I heard a different version: docs or staff would get in the habit of unwinding after a rough day with a few wiffs of N2O, and sit down in the chair for a while with it.... After a few hours of sleeping like this, there's a kind of respiratory supression that sets in, and off they go. I would be interested to know if this is possible, from anybody who knows the effects of N2O well enough. Thanks SP

Linda - 14 Nov 2004 15:55 GMT Well, I think I heard it in hygiene school from one of my instructors actually. And I think it was the guy who had two degrees; pharmacy & dentistry. I'll see if I can go dig up my notes. Kind of interested to see ... some type of long term effect of nitrous abuse. Linda.

Anyhow, the only thing written in there is this: There are instructions on the nitrous/oxygen mixture system and the need for pure oxygen at the end of the session to prevent hypoxia. And there is a couple notes on NO2 abuse - numbness of limbs, possible blockage of Vit B12 causing liver/kidney troubles. Linda.

No inhalation machine can deliver less than the required amount of O2. The air contains 21% O2. We can breathe 100% O2, 50% O2, 30% O2, but never less than 21% O2.
The 100% O2 at the end flushes out the N2O.

I work five days one week and four the next (locum dentist and her staff have the Friday when we're not there) and the week where I work FIVE days.... well come 16h00 on that Friday, I am EXHAUSTED... as I was this here week just finished. I have only one thought: Thank the Gods that I didn't f.ck up some treatment for bein' too tired.. My replacement secretary (who is fast becoming quite an asset at the front desk) tells me that on average, we are even not more profitable on those weeks where we work five days... So, there's something to ask your dentist on Friday: 'are you up for this today, or are you too dead tired...?' Just a thought SP
