Hi again, gang. Now that I've found two part-time hygienists, and my
assistant decided to go work for a perio who does implants, I thought I
had another assistant lined up. It turns out that she fibbed a bit about
her training school letting her do her internship and be paid at the
same time. She left a message this morning saying that the technical
school profs said no. I find myself today without assistant, the hygiene
day cancelled so the hygienist can assist me, and everyone is getting
nervous about what's going on.

Has anyone had experience hiring people without a course and training
them in-house? Where would be the best place to post an advertisement?
The careers section of the newspaper is just too $$$. If anyone has any
ideas, pls sing out. Damn, these last few months have been hell on me
concerning my personnel.
Thanks

Hang in there Stovie:
You sound like a great guy.  It'll work out eventually.
I'd come work for you if I could ... but alas, I am in BC.

Thanks for the vote, Linda, I appreciate it. I would like to have rules
along the lines of your Province: you all are allowed to anesthetize
your patients. I think that would be very useful.
Thanks

Try to hire a waitress.  She would be used to the type of work-day she would
have with you.  Put some buffer time into the schedule and train her
yourself.

In the meantime, get an Isolite.

That's a really smart idea.

I  was thinking along those lines myself. I'll look on their site.

Don't be afraid of the price.  It is about $1K USD.  But, a reasonable DA
would be a lot more than that.

How much will it cost you to reschedule one crown appointment due to a
lack of dental assistant ?  You would cover the cost of the device the
first time.

For smaller mouths, you just order the smaller disposable blocks.

A good idea.

You might also want to check into the Targeted Wage Subsidies Program
through your local Gov't Employment centre. They will cover a  % of wages
for you to train someone.

Wow! I never would have thought of that... Thanks, Roy!. Now that the
Hellish Week is over, I'll get that cheese in the mail.

Re: training someone: I don't think I have the nervous system for that
at this time, with all the sh*t that went down over the last three
months here. I've been assisted by my part-time hygienists, and even
there, it's quite a slog. I really think I'll haul off and get a real
assistant, preferably without a lot of preconcieved ideas. But I haven't
made up my mind totally yet.

Thanks

Have trained greenies in the past.
Expect a bit of time to get up to speed.
A fast learner is imperative.

Go to your favorite bar/pool hall and hand out cards to
good looking chicks telling them that you are
looking for an assistant.

Seriously I never went to the bar looking for assistants
but know of several who have.
