Questions about recent wisdom tooth extraction

Hi,

7 Days ago I had 3 wisdoom teeth removed, 1 on the top left, and 2 on
the bottom left.  I had an extra tooth on the bottom, they were under
the gums and growing into each other, I had constant problems with
them so they had to go.

My dentist really had to fight with the bottom teeth, and I needed
roughly 6 stitches afterwards.  I noticed that there is a hole that is
at least 6mm deep just behind and to the outside of the remaining
molar.  It is black and crusty looking and hard to see the bottom, I
need to shine a bright flashlight into it to see anything.  I am
constantly getting food stuck in it, I don't know how deep the food
particles can go, I have only taken food out from the very top.  I
have a feeling on the inside of my jawbone that feels like there is
something in there, but it could just be clotting or swelling.

My questions are generally as follows :

1) Should there be a hole at all?
2) If food gets deep into the hole is it dangerous? I was told by a
friend that the body can sorround the food and basically push it out
when it heals, but I can't find any supporting evidence.

Right now I am not feeling any pain except for the feeling I outlined
above.  I went to my dentist 2 days ago for him to look at the sites
because the stitches came out in 2-3 days after extraction.  He did
not see anything he considered wrong, but it was a quick visit and I
don't feel that he saw the hole.

I also have pictures if someone is interested in seeing them.

Thanks for your help,

Steve

I would love to see the pictures, but not because I am worried about the
"hole".  I just like looking at teeth!  <G>

Don't focus on this so much.  Keep the area as clean as possible, DON'T
SMOKE! Eat soft foods (avoid nuts, popcorn and stringy food like celery and
steak gristle).  Rinse the area as well as you can.  Get plenty of rest.
Don't go to the gym and lift weights.  Relax and enjoy life.

Hi Steve,

My dentist told me to rinse 3-4 days daily with salt water and twice
daily with some wash he gave me.  The problem is the hole is very
deep, I said before 6mm but I think it is much deeper, I can't seem to
see the bottom of it.  I can't see how I would keep the food out of
it, the circumference is roughly 8mm.  If anythere were to go deep
into it I would not even see it.  If I apply pressure on my cheek
above my bone I can hold the hole closed.

If by chance I do get food stuck deep in the hole what would happen?

Thank you for your time, I greatly appreciate it.

Steve

PS if anyone would like to see the pictures just email me at the above
address.

Don't worry so much.  It will heal.

So what would happen to the food that I can't get out of it?  Does
your body push it out or something?  This is something I really don't
understand.

The same thing that happens to food that gets stuck in between your
teeth! If you don't dissolve and swallow it, I'm sure there are tons
of bacteria in your mouth looking for a meal.

As Stephen said, I wouldn't worry about it so much. After my lower
wisdom teeth were removed, I had a stitch or two that were left over.
I was supposed to get them out at a later appointment with them, but I
said 'screw that' and after it was a bit healed, I yanked them out!
Today the area has healed just fine. I had problems with food and
whatnot getting stuck as well, but after it healed, that wasn't a
problem either.

So as said earlier:

Leave the extraction sites alone and quit worring about this.
If you don't have pain you are most likely healing just fine.
