Mrsralph - 12 Oct 2004 05:09 GMT Is part of the reason crown prices are so high that a crown is expected to last several decades? Thanks!

Mark & Steven Bornfeld DDS - 12 Oct 2004 14:51 GMT > Is part of the reason crown prices are so high that a crown is expected to last > several decades? > Thanks! Generally, dentists try and set fees based on not only general overhead, but also on specific expense associated with a procedure and especially time involved. A crown takes me in the neighborhood of 2 hours of chair time for me. Unlike in medicine, where you are likely to get a bill from your internist and a separate bill from the clinical lab for tests, the lab bills the dentist, and this must be figured into the bill. I understand that this is not the case in Canada. Oh, and then there are the greedy dentists....;-)

Mark & Steven Bornfeld DDS - 12 Oct 2004 19:24 GMT > This is the case in Canada, the lab bills the dentist who subsequently bills > the patient. Thanks for the correction--I thought I had heard otherwise. Is the lab bill broken out as a part of the total fee?

Dr Steve - 12 Oct 2004 19:37 GMT I wish they would allow that here. The labs would probably get paid faster from the insurance carrier than from the dental offices, the patient would stop wondering what secret portion of the bill goes to the lab, and the incentive to use Indonesian labs would end.

> >> This is the case in Canada, the lab bills the dentist who subsequently [quoted text clipped - 4 lines] > > Steve Roy Brown - 13 Oct 2004 02:12 GMT It is usually listed separately as part of the total fee. Copies of invoices go with the insurance. Makes it difficult to bump up the off shore lab bills.

Steven Fawks - 12 Oct 2004 19:59 GMT When I bill for a crown, part of the fee is to cover costs that I will incur on *some* of the crowns for remakes. If a crown that I make fails early in it's service, I remake the crown without further charge to the patient. Usually, it isn't directly 'my fault', but try and explain that to a patient. I cut the prep. I took the impression. I chose the lab. I cemented the crown. If each patient were taking all of the risks, there would be many that would not take a chance on the crown in the first place.
