Effectiveness of herbal cures for toothache

Ok it is a Sunday morning and I have the worst toothache of my life. I
cannot see a dentist until monday and I am reaching desperation. I search
the net for home remedies because even doubling up on paracetamol and
ibuprofen is having no effect. Clove oil is mentioned quite a bit but I have
none and there is nowhere to buy any. I also see Garlic mentioned. I peel a
clove chew it a couple of ties and push it onto the aching tooth. A miricle,
within 30 secs the pain is gone. What is it in garlic that kills the pain?
On the downside within 30 mins I had terrible stomach pains.
So I take a bag of cloves and put them in a saucepan with half a cup of
olive oil. This is then put on a low heat for a couple of hours. I take a
bit of cotton wool and soak this in the oil ten push it up against the
tooth. This also works, but not as well as the garlic, but no stomach
cramps.
I was just curious to find out what dentists think of these herbal
remedies??

<snip snip cut cut>

Maybe 2 tablets (1 gram each) of amoxicillin/day would solve the problem,
for now, giving you the time to get a dentist and have a RCT on that
tooth...

Only if you are non-allergenic to Amoxicillin and in the U.S. .... you
have a Rx.

I believe in Italy no Rx is needed, correct?

Joking again? Joel, considering the fact that it was sunday... i do not know
if in the US you can find someone who will make an RX on Sundays... if else,
pardon me for my ignorance.
However, you're right, and i forgot to state the allergenicity to amoxi.

Italy was a place where one could get penicillin from the pharmacist
without seeing the doctor ........ or am I dating myself again? The
laws may have changed.

I am 31, and in my experience i have always needed the doctor's prescription
to get penicillin etc..
On weekends, OTOH, i could go to a local ER (here is called Pronto Soccorso)
to have a prescription for that, if i really need it.

FOR COMPLETENESS,

Dental pain is of two basic types .......

1. Pulpitis (from a vital or partially-vital tooth) ----> eugenol
works.

2. Abscess (from a DEvital or partially devital tooth only) ---->
Amoxicillin works.

In both cases, its the "PARTIALLY" part that counfounds diagnosis from
patients .... and from dentists!

JOEL

I forgot to mention parafunction because I still have no idea what it
is.

I recently had to spend nearly 48 hours with a "hot" tooth and found that
the only thing that would touch the pain was ice.  Simply keeping the tooth
physically cold made the pain go away instantly.  Allowing the tooth to get warm
made the pain come back instantly.

Ever see someone try to sleep with ice in his mouth?

TRUE, when I see the dude in February walking up and down 2nd Street,
looking for the office, with the 32oz size of Taco Bell Soft Drink,
and sipping away, that's an abscess!

The danger is tyhe ice makes the adjacent teeth hurt!

Drug store .... also known as "eugenol."

They are not exactly the same, but close enough.

Joel

Ambusol contains it.

The garlic scares off the vampires which actuially are yanking on the
nerve ....... nah.

Counter-irritant theory! (complicafed stuff!) vStick with the vampire
explanation.

Cool.

I imagine some people prepare romaine lettuce, get out some parmesean
cheese .... and then use the garlic with that.

No cloves?  Does that really matter when I'm cooking?  Most of the stuff
is dead when it comes out of the oven.

Nevermind, though I was in alt.cooking.

Come on Renate - Joel and I have been asking for years - where are the pics?

Are you talking about whole cloves or cloven cloves?

Cloven cloves are more pungent.

When I was in the downtown Kombat Zone, I had a couple of guys (never
ladies) ask, and I put on expired composite, formed it with my fingers
(canines, never any other tooth). Minimal etch (5secs) and bonding and
polish only with Carbide steel burs (#1157). I don't remember having
trouble getting them off: There would be no etching at the gingival, so
I would just insert a spoon and crack it and then take the rest off with
the #1157. As long as the composite wasn't color matched to the tooth,
it cake off easily and so it was't traumatic, IMO. I'd be interested to
know why you would refuse to do the same.

You know? It's a funny thing: some of those *plastacene* hand formed
jobs looked better (at least initially) than the ones I would agonize
and fret over, doing them *right*.... Makes ya wonder if sometimes I'm
not my own worst enemy....

Does anybody form composite on the anteriors using their gloved hands
for real?

to drink blood, would be a risk of Hep or Aids.
