I'm a 31 year old male and have never been to the dentist in my life.  I
finally went to one because I have 2 cavities in 2 of my top molars.  At my
initial visit, they examined me and gave a list of things I should have
done.

First is debridement and the second is scaling/root planning (4 quadrants).

What I want to know is if all this is necessary.

We need to see your x-rays and some nice close up shots of your gums
.... You can do it!

Only if you want to keep your teeth.

That's probably why you only have 2 cavities to worry about.

Funny you should say that. When I was a kid our dentist filled my mouth
with fillings, I never had any toothache or problems, but every time I went
to the dentist he drilled and filled.

Ive since stopped going to the dentist and have NO problems with my teeth,
I suspect I would have been the same without the fillings - I've never
eaten sweets, take no sugar and brush twice a day.

From what I can see, dentists routinely abuse the mouths of patients to
make a quick buck. It's tantamount to assault. Personally I'd like to go
and find that dentist and knock a few of his teeth out for him.

YUP, but both of us better make the standard disclaimer ,,,,,,
dentists are no more honest or no more DISHONEST than plumbers,
electricians, dry cleaners, postmen, etc.

(What I hear anyway ....)

If they are recommending scaling and root planing, and you have some PPO or
HMO or discount plan which excludes benefits for S&RP, you may wish to get a
second opinion.  You should expect to pay something for the second opinion.
You could get a second opinion regardless of payment plan.

S&RP is an important treatment modality for people with gum problems.  It is
also a somewhat common bait and switch procedure.  Only seeing you in person
can determine if you need this or not.
