| TrenchTown, a really ghetto section of Kingston, Jamaica, to be exact.

Actually, Nine Miles Jamaica.
Nine Mile--so named because it is nine miles east of Alexandria and nine
miles north of Brownstown--is a special place worth the trip. Some people
even call it magical. See, Bob Marley was born here.
And Nine Mile is where the reggae supernova's body was laid to rest in 1981
inside a dulce de leche-colored Ethiopian marble mausoleum next to the
shanty home where he was born in 1945.

Wow! That's one on me... I'd never known about the Nine Miles connection
that appears in some of his songs.
I do know, however, that Trenchtown is where the Rasta movement was
born. If you ever go through that area, you'd say: tough neighborhood...
a lot of gang activity and such.
If you're ever there, it's worth seeing, just make sure you go with
people that are from the area and don't take anything worth stealing...
Remember the 10cc song... Don't like Jamaica... I love it-a ...
So sayeth the dork

Read an article about it once. It's a compound fenced in and
not really worth the trip according to the author.
Don't remember which magazine it was but 'Guitar Player'
sounds like a logical choice. I could be wrong though.

'Fenced in' is the norm in all of the townships in Kingston, not just
the TrenchTown. It is so named for the rudimentary plumbing that
criss-crosses it. (Imagine the smell during the rainy season...) The
place with all the hotels is Montego Bay. From a Guitar Player point of
view, I can see why they'd say that. From a musicologist or documentary
maker's point of view, it would be quite interesting, I think.... To see
how that movement arose out of that.... place.
