We have "been to Jamacia" in the same sense that Dr. Steve recently did.
Having seen a tour ship town and explored the surrounding area hardly makes me
an expert on Jamacia, but we found the scenery stunning and the residents
slightly intimidating.

> Do you salt-water fish ?

Nope, not since I found out that they sell perfectly good fish in food
stores.  However, we DO soak up a bit of the ambience of the salt-water fishing
experience most every Sunday morning when we go down to the drift fishing dock
in Lantana to visit our favorite breakfast place, Tackey Joe's.  Does that
count?

If they actually had one, you would not come out alive, or at best,
missing pieces of your body.

GAWD, poverty positively FLOURISHES there.... Ocho Rios is worth seeing,
and climbing those water falls. That's about it... unless you're a
youngish blonde, or the right color...

We gave the falls a pass, at least the climb.  6 of us hired a van for a
tour&shopping and that worked out pretty good.  They have an official there at
the taxi stand that records the deal you negotiate with the taxi driver and
takes all of your names so they know who you are leaving with.  They told us in
every way possible that you never get in an unofficial taxi, you might never be
seen again!

You're OK if you're with the Locals, or if you stay in the Club Med
complex, etc.... But it's like I say: they don't want us there....

Sound advice.... it goes this way: 'Hi, I'm Oscar, Sirs, and I can take
you anywhere you want to go....' Bang; into the Bay with you. Isn't that
too bad, they fished some more tourists out of the Bay with their
throats cut. They must have been in the drug trade....

If you ever do go back, arrange a climb with the hotel. It is really a
gas...

I'd say you got away with one of the best experiences a tourist COULD
get.. No injuries, no problems. They don't want us there. Only the
buisnesses do...

I do remember lots of talk about injuries climbing those Falls.  We
skipped it out of my (perhaps ungrounded) fear of injuring a wrist and
not being able to work.

Sissy.

But I don't climb either, fear of heights and all that.
It's not the fall that kills you, it's the sudden stop at the end.

I have walked on I-Beams in my construction days.  I have worked on
the tallest building's roofs in Detroit.  Fear of heights was never my
problem.  Now that I am over 50, fear of breaking a wrist keep me from
doing lots of things.  I enjoy doing dentistry too much to risk not
being able to do it.

I, for one, think that's a very good attitude. My Dad still goes skiing
on the face of the Matterhorn every year, but he's been doing it since
his late twentys. You have to consider the worst case scenario and see
if you can accept that.,,. I therefore understand re: your not climbing
those falls. I do have some experience, and so I'd do it again. But
there'd be some money in it for the guide.... after we got back down
safely.

I'm sure one can find crime and anti-Western feeling in a lot of
places.  There are plenty of Jamaicans here in Brooklyn, and they are
generally very decent folk, certainly not hostile.

Yes!  The Jamacians I have bumped in to here in Florida are very decent and
trustworthy folk, and that goes for most of the Caribbean islanders I have met.
That said, you can not generalize from them to an unprotected walk through a
Jamacian getto.

Dear Friends,
The word "ghetto" has had an interesting evolution of use.

> Main Entry: 1ghetto
> Pronunciation: 'ge-(")tO
[quoted text clipped - 9 lines]
> ghetto especially in conferring inferior status or limiting opportunity
> <stuck in daytime TV's ghetto>

Today in American society, we tend to think of a ghetto as a place where
danger lurks around every corner. a place where crime makes it possible
for people to survive financially (a life of crime),...

The word "barrio" has had a similar dynamic:

> Main Entry: barrio
> Pronunciation: 'bar-E-"O, 'bar-
[quoted text clipped - 6 lines]
> 2 : a Spanish-speaking quarter or neighborhood in a city or town in the U.S.
> especially in the Southwest

Not at all surprised to hear that. Those people are going places and
making headway for themselves. That's why they left their homes. You see
a lot of them in the Cayman Islands as well. Those are the ones that are
go-getters and want to excell for themselves and their children. I'd say
that if a Jamaican can get out of his island and make a go of it in
Brooklyn, NY (where it gets cold in winter), that alone is victory.
