Hi all,
I found lots of links on the internet/usenet regarding how to use a
manual toothbrush, but none of them for an electric toothbrush. In
particular I am interested to the Oral-B 3D excel which I'm most likely
going to buy in the next few days.
Given the shape of the brush, I guess it's not possible to make an angle
towards the gum line as it's recommended with the manual toothbrushes.
I guess the only possibility is to use it orthogonal to the tooth and
gum surface, correct?
Should I put the circular brush so that half of it's area is on the
tooth and half is on the gum, or should I keep it so that it's 100% on
the tooth and not touch the gums?
Another question: for manual toothbrushes it is recommended to change
them often because when they lose their original shape they can sting
the gums with the threads which are bent out, and so make the gums
recess. For the same reason (stinging the gums) it's not recommended to
keep a manual toothbrush orthogonal to the gums and teeth. Well... an
electric toothbrush seems MUCH more harsh on the gums to me than it's a
whatever-old manual toothbrush, and also it's to be used orthogonally!
What am I missing here?
Also I heard of someone saying bad things of the rotary motion electric
toothbrushes: he claimed that with their rotary motion they were likely
to push debris down the gum line which is very bad. Anybody here
believes this? And if yes: any recommendation on the usage in order to
prevent this?
Thanks in advance

I always recommend the Rota-Dent, only available through your dentist.
It was designed by dentists for patients who want to protect their teeth
and gum tissue.
When we prescribe the brush to a patient, we sit them down and show them
how to use it. We bring them back in two weeks to see that things are
going well and that the gums are not being traumatized. We use
disclosing solution which stains the plaque and therefore gives patients
good feedback as to their efficiency.
This is the best recommendation I can give you.
Regardless of the brush you use, keep the stroke gentle, so that you
don't hear the motor starting to force, use a gel (preserves the
bristles better) and change the head every three months AT MOST. More
than that and the bristles become a danger to the gum tissue. Do the
whole tooth, but don't overlap onto the gum tissue. If you do the whole
tooth, the gum will take care of itself. Also, if disclosing solution is
available in your neck of the woods, get some and use it. It will show
you how good of a job you are doing.

1. Place tootbrush in mouth FIRST.
2. Turn switch on SECOND.
If you reverse the order you may end up with a spatter-paint bathroom
ceiling ......
Joel
PS- This is TOOTBRUSH, not toothbrush.

Well, it would have been called a "teethbrush" except that it was
invented by a guy who lived in a trailer camp out near Amboy, CA off
of the old Route 66.

I enjoy brushing slowly and gently with very little toothpaste for several
passes (decreasing the amount of paste each time and rinsing in between).
Each time, I do three laps per quarter. From the front to the rear and then
back on top, then the same for both inside and outside of each quarter. The
brush does the work. Nothing else quite like that for making my mouth feel
good. And, FWIW, I use my left hand for brushing the right side.
If it hurts, I would lighten up or go back to a regular brush for a while.
Have fun.
