So, JME, whyn't you go back and get your PhD now? You have the time, you
can write, you know how to research.... You can go after one of the
gut-wrenchingly passionate research topics like 'the role of arginine in
the control of adult male white rat incisor enamel synthesis.'

Seriously, you could take your time, do it in six or eight years, and
take some intresting teaching associateships in either department at the
same time.

Think it over....

WAY TOO LATE .....

The institution self-destructed ...... it went into bankruptcy for
$1.5 Billion (screwing all the little guys - vendors), stole all the
endowment money including D. Walter Cohen's dental clinic money, a
couple of dudes went to jail in the process, and now Tenet wants to
close it down .......

Too bad too. It was an excellent small medical school, but they saw
expansion as a way into the big leagues .....

I was fairly decent at writing research grants .,......... I am
excellent at plagarizing .......

There are othere schools. Just make sure that when you go for the
interview, you adopt the John Belushi/Dan Acroyd look (Blues Brothers:
Fedora, dark glasses, dark suit, white shirt, dark tie) so no body
recognises you. DON'T tell them you come in here...

I don't think Harvard grads get through on plagarism; Yale, maybe, but
not Haaarvaahd.

I am sure that Joel could, if he if he had sufficient reason to, and if he
would put up with the BS.

I finished my Master's with (blush) a very good GPA, and had a tentative
offer of a fellowship and unquestioned admission to the PhD program.  In short,
I was being actively recruited.  There was just one thing that I was missing
and, in the end, my whole decision hinged on the lack of this one item: A
rationale.

    They almost got me.

Sounds like you don't regret it. I guess congrats are in order. I
suppose there is also the issue of where you'd do the degree. There is
one school I've studied at where I wouldn't take a fellowship at any
price. I won't mention the name to protect the guilty.

We had a pre-doctoral student transfer from Harvard.

He said that they are more geared toward research.

I thought of that idea for myself, but the comprehensive exam makes it very
difficult.  Even if you have amazing retention, the material will change over
that length of time.  Also, many institutions (including my own) only accept
very recent graduate credits.

Again, I think that a school policy like this is assinine.... What is
'recent'? By the time one finishes a modern BSc, the intro physiology
and biology and immunology courses that one took in 1st and 2nd year are
outdated. Yet, the school will honor that student with a BSc anyways.
What is one to do if one decides to go back to school after an abscence?
You're not gonna re-do your u-grad....

En Passant Vaughn: what did you think about what I suggested re: the
gliding?

I really like the concept of a motor glider and perhaps some day I will
have one for my retirement toy.  That said, I don't want to "roll my own".  A
local guy did that, he added a two-stroke engine that folded into the back of
the fuselage.  Perhaps he did something a little bit wrong.  It caught fire one
day and he got to test his parachute (it worked fine).  I got to see him on the
evening news.

As far as my gliding, I hope that someone around here will start a soaring
club, but it won't be me.  I am afraid every one else around here thinks the
same way!  Until then, I live two minutes from a fine airport and I can always
rent a Cessna to scratch the flying itch.  What hurts is before they were paying
me to fly, now the money will be flowing in the wrong direction.

Who knows? Maybe your company will change its mind. In the meantime,
you'll get a lot of fun out of the singe-engines.
