I am currently a professional computer programmer.  I am considering
changing careers and becoming a dentist.

Can anyone point me to some resources that are specific to this?  I am
especially interested in the challenges that face someone taking this
unconventional route (how do I support my family, make mortgage
payment, etc).

I appreciate your help.

Good plan.

I think you should talk to your bank, and find out all you can about
loans and bursaries. You should also hang around a couple of dental
clinics to see what goes on from the other end and see if it's for you.
I can't overemphasize how different the practice is from the general
public's conception of what dentistry is.

That is a huge change in how you would spend your day.  Why have you chosen
Dentistry?  If it is for the money, you will not have enough years to get
your investment back.  If it is for the sake of doing that type of work,
then the cost of changing careers will not matter.

I maxxed my student loans and then went to the bank to get a line of credit.
By the end of my schooling I had $95,000 in student loans and $75,000 in a
line of credit.  I did not have a mortgage payment but I did have 2 kids and
an un-salaried housewife.  I was fortunate that the Canadian tuition wasn't
quite as expensive as some American schools.
