pros and cons of each?

also will insurance cover gold fillings?

Depends/depends.

Gold inlays and goil foil are two of the best restorations, but I
can't find customers who will tolerate that!

Gold is ductile meaning one can draw out the margins over the edge of
the tooth structure (with burnishing). This makes for a zero
micrometer (um) gap! Zero.

Nah, mercury is the stuff you want. It looks great and is really good for
you.
Dr Steve - 01 Dec 2003 19:37 GMT
Most dental offices will charge roughly the same fee for gold and for
porcelain.

Gold is ductile and will deform if hit too hard (think dent), while
porcelain is more brittle (just like tooth enamel) and can chip if hit too
hard.

Gold can only be cemented to a tooth, while porcelain can be bonded to the
tooth.  Think Elmer's glue vs epoxy.

Gold has 100 years of history proving it can last a long time.  Porcelain is
new.

You are absolutely right George.  I was thinking of modern casting
techniques and alloys.  But, you are correct historically.

I just heard from a colleague who was at the New York Meeting that
Invisalign fabricates in Costa Rica. Could it be?

What are the major components of a gold filling? THe constituents of amalgam
are easy to discover, but not of a gold filling.
