Align Technology makers of Invisalign clear orthodontic braces has
announced they will be imposing a quota effective immediately on
dentists/orthodontists. This means that if the doctor does not sell so
many Invisalign cases by the end of the year, they will be booted as
an Invisalign provider. The announcement came from their sales and
marketing department under the disguise that this is a proficiency
requirement. Invisalign has also recently increased its fees for the
fabrication of these aligners. The good news is there are competitors
out there which can offer the same aligners at a much lower cost,
there are also many other options such as lingual braces with new self
ligating brackets ie no elastics so the teeth move faster. I believe
this is suicide for Invisalign as most dentists are not willing to be
pressured to sell Invisalign to meet a quota as this can lead to harm
to patients and malpractice.
As an analogy how would you like to be a patient of a doctor who
places heart valves to be under a quota by the manufacturer for a
specific heart valve or they could not use it again for somebody who
may really need it? How about a medication? Do you see the potential
for abuse by some few bad apples?
btw in this economy it is no wonder that business may be low. This
could also be an effort by Align to downsize and fire its sales
representatives as they will not need so many nationwide.
who knows.
In my opinion Align has always been a prostitute company by
incouraging kick-backs to doctor's staff, and other quotas for
marketing, and reduced fees for doctors who submit more cases.
I say let them trash and burn, let the stock holders find out and good
riddance, we have better companies out there that can do the same
thing at a lower cost for everyone.

This is very, very troubling to me, in that, unlike gimmicks such as
OxyFresh, PerioProtect and LANAP for periodontal diseases, Invisalign
actually DOES work in correcting SOME orthodontic problems. Are the
whitening/bleaching companies like Zoom and Brite-Smile doing this
too! Very sad for our profession. Gives us the image of being
hucksters.
