Cracked Tooth - what to do ?

Im currently undecided what to do.  I have a cracked tooth on the left side.
It is my 'First Molar' .

I get excruitiating pain if I try to chew anything on it. Even if its just a
blueberry or anything. Although if I dont chew anything at all on that side,
I get no pain.

So I have no real root damage. The roots are strong.  It must be a small
crack underneath everything that must be hitting the root at times ?

I had a temporary crown done over a month ago.. the temp. crown is still on
and I still have the same amount of pain as before when trying to chew.

Its pizzin me off because this is a major chewing tooth..and I guess the
only option is a root canal ?  should one be done on that tooth or should I
just have it taken out ?

any advice is much appreciated

thanks
john

I assume the temporary crown was placed by your regular dentist in
anticipation of a permanent crown.  You're saying the pain was the same
before the temporary crown was placed?  Your symptoms are consistent
with a fracture, but there could be pulpal involvement as well.  Sorry,
no way to tell.  But it's likely your own dentist will be able to
figure this out.

Good luck,
Steve

Could be a theraputic crown used as a diagnostic aid.

Definitely has the symptoms of a 'cracked tooth'.

Problem is the only definitive way to view the extent
of the crack is to remove all decay, filling materials, temp crowns,
etc... and actually view the crack.

Whether the tooth is restorable is dependant on the extent of
fracture.

RCT and crown for some, EXT for others.

Can you post an x-ray ? May or may not be helpful.

The x-rays didnt show anything.

EXT = extraction ?

I have to go back there in a week..  my problem is I KNOW he's going to want
to try the root canal next..   its all about $$ these days right ?

So realistically, do you guys think it would be worth it to have a root
canal ?  I know your not able to diagnose correctly without all the
technical data.   but generally speaking ?

The pain only occurs during one specific bitedown , when he does the
bitedown test... and I remember him saying "its only over there?".    But
TRUST me, the pain is excruciating whenever I try to chew something over
there.

If I get it extracted, will I still be able to chew on my left side ?  That
first molar seems so important.

I appreciate the help, guys.

Should I have the root canal done or no ?  I need to save this tooth.

Do you think I need a hair-cut?     Oh, wait, you have never seen my hair in
person.

Sorry for the sarcasm, but I hope you get the point.

If you trust your dentist follow his recommendation.
If still unsure, you may want a second opinion or three.

Perhaps a consult with an endodontist.

Root canal build-up and crowm= about $3000

extraction, bone graft, implant placement surgery, implant abutment,
crown= about $4500

Is it about the money???? you tell me because if it is then wouldn't
option 2 be better?

you fractured a tooth and you are in pain. If it is possible to save
the tooth then that is what you should do. If there are any questions
that this crack is straight down the tooth, then i'd consider option 2.
