I had a root canal done in an upper molar a couple of years ago - well
after eating a meal at the weekend when I woke the next morning it felt
as if some food had managed to get underneight it - the gum either side
was swollen too.

Well obviously it is one I can't floss as the filing covers it. So I
kept kind of sucking it to get the food out all day long. Later in the
evening I had a splitting headache and the feeling as if the tooth was
aching. Right now it feels less painful a day or so later but still
feels like there is pressure under the tooth. Is there a chance that it
will go or will i have to go to the dentist to get it checked out.

Hi,

I think that you should have the tooth examined and possibly xrayed. I
had a similar problem and eventually, the crown came off. Apparently,
the tooth can have an air leak (I believe that is what I had), which
can cause spaces where the crown and tooth meet. Food and air will get
into this space, which can lead to the tooth decay. Once the tooth
decays too much, you could possibly lose the tooth, depending on how
much healthy tooth is left and whether a new crown can be placed on
the tooth.
Your dentist would be a better person to talk to concerning this
issue.

Take care

Get it checked by a dentist IRL !
