Returned from my dentist visit a few days ago after having an old
crown replaced. He said the new one was stronger that the old one
(porcelain?) as it "had some metal in it".

I should have asked at the time and may have got this all wrong but:-
a) Are old crowns really made of porcelain?
b) What is the metal he was referring too? I hope it's not not some
amalgam as used in fillings!
Thanks

what material do you use for crowns?

Dr. Cremona inhabits the more advanced end of the technological bell curve,
but I will let him explain that for himself.  (Suffice to say, I wish he
were my dentist)

Your dentist (and mine) is more likely to prepare your tooth to accept a
crown, and then take an impression of your mouth and send it, along with a
prescription, to a dental lab.  That lab is likely to make a "PFM" crown
(Porcelain Fused to Metal) which the dentist will fit onto your prepared
tooth.

If you are a "private" patient (no insurance) your dentist will probably
specify "semi-precious" metal for the core of your crown.  If you have
dental insurance, your insurance company will probably insist that your
dentist save a few dollars by substituting "non-precious" (read "crap")
metal.

Yes, I am prejudiced.

We use semi-precious, regardless of insurance, cash or what any
company tells us to use.  It's semi or full gold.

The difference in lab fee was so small that I always used precious when I
used to use metal.

Does it matter?
Two years ago i requested and paid $970.00  for a gold crown, small tooth,
After the crown was installed and I got the bill which described the crown
as
"high noble crown" what is a high noble crown?
