Ordinarily we try very hard to prevent patients from going to a full
lower denture. However, the outlook of a year and a half retention of
the remaining teeth isn't much. I'm inclined to recommend you get a
second opinion.

Indeed. The money wasted on retaining the last few teeth for a short
period of time might be better spent on a couple of implants to
help stabilize a lower denture for a long time.
Of course it's impossible to know for sure over the internet.

No upper teeth ?
It is very difficult to wear and function with a complete lower
denture.
With out some pictures or x-rays am unable to advise further.
Any chance of posting those ?

While we always try to salvage as many teeth as possible in the lower
arch to prevent a patient from having a full lower denture to contend
with, it seems that a year and a half is not a good long-term
prognosis. Usually when someone is only 41 and already has so many
missing teeth and if there are only the lower 6 anterior teeth
remaining, there are usually many, many things wrong with the gums
and the teeth themselves. If the teeth are badly decayed, need root
canal work and crowns, or are loose from pyorrhea, then based upon
your past dental history/track record perhaps they should be removed.
That said, the bone around the lower eye-teeth is usually adequate for
the placement of an immediate implant into each socket, followed by an
implant retained full lower denture 4 months later. These implant
retained lower dentures almost always satisfy the patient, as in my
experience, the standard lower denture is usually retained in the
patient's bedroom bureau sock drawer. Compared to possibly six root
canals, 6 crowns, and gum surgery, it is usually more cost effective
to place implants as I described.
Lastly, if you have been walking around without an upper full denture,
I don't think that you will miss these last remaining teeth.

Yeah, I have an upper denture with no teeth up there of course. I have
decided to have the last 6 teeth pulled. While the dentist is consevative
and doesn't want to pull them I look in the mirror and I think they look
awful. She described to me the consequences of getting rid of the teeth. I
just don't see the point of keeping the teeth I don't like and build a
bridge that will last a year or 2. I know lower dentures are going to be a
bitch and taking a long time to get used too. I know on the internet without
looking it's difficult.
Now you implants-is that considerably more money??
