Well, my dentist finally wandered back into town and I stopped in to speak with
him today. He had looked at the labs I had provided and then gave me a song and
dance about covering himself in case I bled or if something else unpleasant
occurred. Well, if he's worried about bleeding, he's asked for the wrong labs.
PT/PTT would be more to the point. He already had my platelet count. And of
course, he had the empirical experience of the oral surgeon from cutting out my
wisdom teeth two or three weeks ago.
Well, I'm not inclined to argue. He's entitled to his own opinion. One of my
nursing buddies suggested he insisted on the HgbA1C as a way to push back my
procedure.... only the delay would be on me instead of him.... since I would
have to get in to see my primary, then have the labs drawn. I'm not generally
one for conspiracies under every rock, but what he said to me made so little
sense I was sure I was just being jerked off.
Not a problem. I asked for my records as I was leaving. He's fired. My
records will be ready for me to pick up tomorrow. I'm also going to run by my
oral surgeon's office and pick up a copy of the x-rays taken back in September
so my new dentist won't feel obligated to do them again.
Now my choices appear to be my old dentist from two years ago, which is fine
with me. I only left her because she didn't accept my insurance plan. Since
there's no insurance money to be had this time around, I am free to go where I
please. My other option is the son of my girlfriend's best female friend (whom
I'm friendly with also... in a strictly social sort of way). I don't know that
I'd get a deal but I'm fairly certain I wouldn't get screwed.
In the meanwhile my broken aft molar (#31?) aches. Vicodin is proving to be my
friend. I take one or two in about 48 hours when I can't stand it any more.
Motrin is good, too.
Film at 11....

Like most of the other dentists on SMD, I've been following your
postings. To be sure, most ofr us (all?) have never asked for a HgbA1c
test ourselves. What would we treat with that info? We certainly don't
turn away brittle diabetics, au contraire.
Howsomever, It seems to me that this particular dentist didn't really
want to treat you, for some other reason than the HgbA1C test, which
no dentist would order as "so, how do I treat this diabetes -
dentists can't practice medicine). As a periodontist, I often ask DM
patients for their "number" just to measure this with the degree of
disease I find. However, surgically I may ask for PT, PTT, and INR for
coumadin patients.
I think that this dentist wanted/had "reason" to get rid of you -
that is not completely clear from your postings.
Were there other tests that "a dentist" could/should have ordered? Or
been aware of? I can only think of one if you don't take Coumadin or
have another bleeding disorder. Again WE are not practicing medicine.
We can't treat, legally, medical problems. A blood test would only be
some sort of CYA. Do you think that there might be a reason that a
"reasonable person" i.e. a dentist might want to risk discriminating
against you? It would have to be from some sort of fear...
