Flipper Question

I had tooth 11 removed 3 weeks ago and got the flipper a week later.
My gum is still sore with bone graft material still shedding so my
oral surgeon told me I should wait until it heals. I saw him today and
he shaved the top of the tooth on the flipper which was way to pointy
and big. However, my lower eye tooth is hitting the flipper and my
back teeth don't meet. Can the dentist or lab file down the width of
the flipper, the pink part? I have to see my general dentist after
wearing the flipper for a week so he sees sore spots but aren't I
supposed to be able to close my teeth so that the back teeth meet? I
know flippers can be adjusted but I am not clear as to which part can
be.

See your dentist now.  The surgeon is apparently unable or unwilling to
adjust it properly.  Yes, you should be able to close your teeth
together with the flipper in place.  My concern is that too much
pressure is being placed by the flipper over the graft site.  I'm no
surgeon but you shouldn't see graft material shedding.  It may be bits
of the membrane, but too much pressure on the graft will cause it to
fail.  Don't wait for sore spots.

I will be seeing him next week. I don't have to wear the flipper in
the meantime. I forget if a membrane was placed over the extraction
site but the OS removed a little fragment of bone and said that the
gum will be healed over in a few weeks. He said it's healing well.
Maybe he feels that the dentist who gave me the flipper should be
responsible for adjusting it any further.

I have no problem with that.  But you're the one walking around with
the missing tooth--how do you feel?

Steve, I took your advice, called and went over to my general dentist.
He used carbon paper and filed it several times until my back teeth
touched. I am going to wait a bit to wear it because of the soreness.
As far as the socket, he said most likely the oral surgeon did not
cover it with a membrane and that not all of the graft is always
absorbed but it looks normal. They both said it can take 2-3 more
weeks for the gum to cover over. I think I better just go with that
and not worry anymore. How do I feel? Well, #2 is healing well, less
red now so one down although it is annoying against my last remaining
tooth, not painful but a weird sensation that I hope to get used to. I
feel badly about losing 11 and bummed about the way I am speaking and
the thought of living with this flipper until I can decide on a
permanent solution. I feel self-conscious but explain to people that I
am awaiting an implant. My mouth is configured in a way that you
really don't see the missing tooth when I talk, as long as I don't
smile with my teeth showing. The flipper looks great though, the color
matches exactly. Just feels like I have a mountain in my mouth and I
wonder if I will ever get used to it. It's like when we have something
in our eye and then it comes out, we realize we take just feeling
normal for granted. It's just hard to have a mouth that feels so not
like it did before. Thanks for your replies and concern.

Everyone is different, (obviously) but it tends to get easier most of
the time.  People tend to tolerate flippers rather than love them.
