Saturday it was wind ... yesterday just a little on the cold side ...
and today: *let it snow, let it snow, let it snow". My neighborhood is
white and the stuff just keeps falling.
That's it for the December update from The Mojave Desert. Nothing more
implied ... (I am abandoning that other "thread" for the sake of peace
and harmony.)

Hi Webby.
So it's beginning to look a lot like Christmas in Vegas?
We just got back from a 6-week vacation. We drove across the country, spent
time with the grandfamily, sold our car, and then hopped a slow cruise ship for
Florida. Had a great time! We always wanted to drive across the country, but
not round trip. Since we needed to downsize to one car, this was the golden
opportunity. Texas is big, really really big!
We thought about Webby and Vegas, but could not find a low route to get
there, and then get us to CA. For Margaret, we have to keep our nights at 2000
feet or below.

What a great idea! I hope we have the moxie to downsize to one car.
It's tempting.
Best to you, Margaret and the family for a great holiday!
Steve

Hi there, Vaughn and welcome back (home)!! What a *journey* you and
Margaret had together! I couldn't be happier for you both. :-)))
And, I must tell you that I'm so curious to know *how you managed to get
to CA* with Margaret's elevation needs coupled with the reality of the
mountains in the west? You must deserve some kind of a navigation award
for the job you did getting yourselves from one side of the country!
Both of you were really courageous; please tell Margaret that I'm so
pleased that the trip was such a success and I'm still hoping we'll be
in CA's Bay Area at the same time one day soon.
Take care,
Webby

The answer was easy but a bit boring; I10 west across the southern lowlands
and then I5 up through California to the bay area. There are a few higher
altitude spots, but they were all brief enough to be manageable, nothing like
that more northern "Donner pass" route. I say "boring" because we had to choose
only stops of interest that were close to that path. For example; a trip to the
Grand Canyon was out of the question unless we were to rent oxygen. Our intent
was to buy a GPS for the trip, but once our path was decided, we quickly saw
that there was no need! Anybody can follow an Interstate highway.
It was a tradeoff. We could have rented an oxygen machine and traded freedom
of movement for the expense and PITA of tethering Margaret to a damn machine,
but ultimately decided to do the trip the way we did.
Now you know why cruising works out so well for us, it is inherently a sea
level experience. The highest altitude we encountered there was our stateroom
in the middle of the Panama canal.
Just to bring things back on topic, those of you still in the dental biz
will be delighted to know that one of the "spa" treatments they were offering on
the cruise ship was tooth whitening.

Here is a link to a slideshow from our local newspaper. There should
also be a little video link there too. All of this is in my
"backyard"...

It looks like we're all getting "winter" just before winter arrives.
Take care everyone,

Brrrrrrr and it must be beautiful!!!!

Drove over to Bad Axe to get Strad a Holiday present. White-out conditions
the whole way. Roads buried under packed snow and ice. I was lucky when I
could see 3-4 car-lengths in front of me. The snow from the past weeks is
busy re-positioning itself. The open farm fields offer no resistance to its
travel. Start with 2 feet of snow, now add in light snow fall and 25 MPH
winds gusting to 35.
Was going to take Strad to the local Hill for sledding. Much too windy.

Used to have a couple from the upper peninsula visit Richmond
during the winter becausee is was deemed by them to be 'mild'.
Right now it's around zero and a few inches of snow on the ground.
I can only imagine what they faced 'up north'.

Some homes in the "U-P" are built with second floor entrances for winter
