Are there any ways to treat an abscess other than root canal? Aren't there degrees of abscess where some are treatable that will heal and clean up on their own? If it is a dental pulp abscess, the only other way is to draw forth the tooth. However, many times the abscess does stop hurting, but the tooth will still be infected and likely to BITE you again. If it is a periodontal or gingival abscess, sometimes root-planing and a course of antibiotics will clear it up until definitive periodontal therapy can be rendered. Hot water bottle over time, infrared? other? Depends on abscess location. There are couple kinds of abcess. However The rule is clear- open abscess, clean or add antobiotics to remove abscess reason.
