Are there any ways to treat an abscess other than root canal? Aren't
there degrees of abscess where some are treatable that will heal and
clean up on their own? Hot water bottle over time, infrared? other?

If it is a dental pulp abscess, the only other way is to draw forth
the tooth. However, many times the abscess does stop hurting, but the
tooth will still be infected and likely to BITE you again.

If it is a periodontal or gingival abscess, sometimes root-planing and
a course of antibiotics will clear it up until definitive periodontal
therapy can be rendered. However, many times even these teeth must be
drawn.

Sure, you can have the tooth extracted.

Depends on abscess location. There are couple kinds of abcess.
However The rule is clear- open abscess, clean or add antobiotics to
remove abscess reason.
Using only medication tablets etc Never get steady treatment result.
