I have no idea if it is true, but it is listed as *net* pay. By the
time you take the list of deductions from the gross, the net is
substantially less!
A W-2 may say taxable income is $175,000, but no way in hell is that
dentist going to have that much to take home after that list of deductions.
Also, these figures are probably being calculated with all licensed
dentists. Lots of dentists keep their license, yet may work only part
time as they get to retirement age. More dentists are female as well
and without being sexist, they do not work as many hours over their
career as most male dentists.
Another factor is that the incomes are averaged over the whole
country. A dentist in a small midwestern town is not going to have
the income of a busy suburban dentist on the east or west coast.
So the figures may indeed be accurate, but not truly reflect the
earning power of a motivated dentist in the prime of their career.

I haven't been in the job market for almost 20 years, but I don't ever
remember making as much as $200/day in a straight salary position. And
in a competitive market like NY, the dentists were generally offering a
percentage of gross minus the lab fee.
IOW, in the private sector, life as a salaried dentist was never so
great in NY.
A 5-day job at $400/day gross income (not production, but income) still
comes out to $100K a year. From where I sit, that's not so bad for a
new graduate.
Of course, where I sit is that my last year's tuition was about $5k at
NYU, so I may just be living in the dark ages. But I don't see it as
any dentist's birthright to go out and expect to make in 6 figures
immediately. I won't do that this year (and not happy about it).
