Can Abscess Cause Swelling On Lingual Side?

Tooth 20 is crowned and not root canaled. Before when I was using the
water pik, it hurt a little when it hit the inside of the gum (the part
closer to the tongue). Then I felt the bone that goes around that part,
about a half inch below the tooth and it felt a little black and blue.
The pain was only here for a minute and not severe. Can an abscess show
this way with no swelling or pain on the outside of the gum or when I
press low where the root is?

Hi, Fran--

Yes, it can present as tenderness on the lingual surface.  But many
people also have overgrowth of bone in that area, and the overlying
tissue is often stretched thin and is easily traumatized.  By all means
get it checked if it continues, esp. if the tooth becomes tender to
biting pressure.
OT:  I assume you heard the sad news about Artie Traum's passing?

Thanks for the reply. It seems better now, maybe just the pressure of
the waterpik since it only lasted for a minute. I will check it out if
it becomes tender again. There is no pain on biting or tapping.

I did hear about Artie. Liver cancer. So sad! I didn't know him but know
his brother.
