Unfortunately, I am seeing a great decrease in activity in all usenet
groups I participate--with one exception--the bicycle racing newsgroup,
and this is probably only because the Tour de France is going on.  Most
of the other groups I visit are music-related, and they all seem to be
suffering a decline both in quantity and quality, with the more esteemed
posters leaving and the spam increasing.
Maybe it's the competition from the blogosphere--usenet is becoming a
neglected backwater.  I've heard that some of the ISPs are removing nntp
service from their subscribers.
In any case, I share your pain.

Google = spam!  I really think that Google wants to kill the Usenet for good.

I have been earnestly predicting the death of Usenet for a long time.  Like
our old cat, the Usenet is still alive, but is showing its age.  Shamefully,
most regular users of the Usenet don't even know it exists!  (think about it)

I've heard that some of the ISPs are removing nntp

Yep, starting with AOL.  (of course, that was not entirely a bad thing)
Usenet access can be free and easy.  Unless you want to make over 25 posts a
day, all you need to know is nntp.aioe.org.

Our longtime friend, Vaughn, has been our Champion of Warning (us) that
the demise of the Usenet has been upon us .... and ... upon bookshelf
has longtime been a book that I co-authored which "banked" upon the
Usenet as a vehicle to share with readers the particular mindsets of
groups of like-minded professionals and (the profession's) like and
unlike-mined patients ... concerning the topic of "The TMJ" ...

Usenet is not for everyone.  But it has been used as a valuable tool for
and by some to help people see with an empathy of sorts that otherwise
would not likely have been available.

I, for one, hope that "we" can keep this communication artery alive for
the sake of ... well .. for the sake of those who have taken time in
their lives to participate here, in Usenet, to tap into the mindset of
those whose ideas are not so much like their own as much as they are
like those of people who wish to relate to others.

Thanks friends... Usenet has been our conduit.  I hope we can keep it
alive.

It's summertime.

Late sunsets and a myriad of other activities
besides usenet.

Besides, you are having a long lingering thread
with the 'jerm'. Not particularly fruitful IMO but
what do I know ? Some of the NTI masters have

Actually, last year was the first time in a long time that I
had done any water skiing.  I lifted one ski a couple of times,
but didn't really try to switch to one.  I'm sure I would need
very smooth water.  Maybe I'll give it a try when we go to
Table Rock.  I also didn't try to get any 'air' crossing
the wake.

It is a lot different than when I was in my 20s!

In checking Google maps, it looks as though Truman Lake is *roughly* 2.5
hours (drive) from your neck of the woods.  Is it close enough to go
skiing for the day weekly while the weather lasts or is it not close
enough?

Up at Interlochen one of the larger rehersal rooms is called the "Shed".
And "Charlie's Shed" is slightly smaller.  Both rooms will handle a full
symphony orchestra.

We do a lot of our chamber group playing in small practice rooms in the
"lower levels" of the various campus dormitories and ancillary buildings.
These get crowded with more than 4 people in them.

ps  we drove up Saturday to hear this week's concert and check in with
Strad.  Apparently, the new "tennis shoes" we bought him two weeks ago, are
already to tight ot wear !!  His feet grew about an inch in one week !  The
camp has the kids rehearse 3 hours each day, and put on a full concert on
the 6th day.  They get only one week to learn 2-3 full symphony pieces.  I
am amaxed because they pull it off.  The concerts are always wonderful.  I
checked the roster of musicians.  4-5 kids in the orchestra were from
Michigan.  About 8-10 were from Europe.  3-4 from the Far East.  2 from
South America.  The rest were from every corner of the USA.  What a great
experience for the kids.!~!!  I look forward to hearing this week's
performance on Saturday.

I just got back from a day of sailing.  WB has been on this boat with us.
Great air today.  7 knots of boat speed with just a jib.

Nice !

You lucky dog.
Generally in a higher wind situation calling for one sail
prefer using the main. You get a better view too.

Gene feels it is easier to unfurl and re-furl the jib in rougher seas.  This
way no one had to climb on top of the cabin to raise or downhaul the main.
I'm just the Helmsman, so I do what I am told on someone else's vessel.   We
had almost maximum hull speed with 130% Genoa.

Will do.

Yesterday's sail became an adventure towards the end.  We were crossing the
shipping channel on the USA/Canada border when the wind dropped to 3 knots
for a while.  All of a sudden it instantly went to 17 knots of wind and the
lee side of the boat was about 24 inches from putting gunwales in the water.
Wind would clock direction a bit, and range from 15-22 knots.  Wind strength
was no big deal, but the constant changing of intensity of direction made it
a challenge.  Decided to put a reef in the mail sail.  The 82 yr old skipper
went up to set the reef and the outhaul became fouled on a block.  I
surrendered the helm to Mrs. Gene, who has decades of experience.  I helps
clear the outhaul, and the wind clocked around about 20 degrees.  Mrs. Gene
was watching her husband on top of the cabin rather than wind direction, and
we ended up with both sails flopping in the shrouds and no steering (rudder
ended up hard to starboard).  Ended up just mortoring in from that point.

Had a great picnic with our friends and the folk from the adjacent wells.
Was another great sailing day with a minor bit of excitement at the end.

> The desert must be dreadful in the summer.

Hot, yes.  But not dreadful day in and day out. For the most part, life
goes on.  It's a different sort of heat when the humidity is 4%!  If it
gets to double digits, we *feel* HOT... but those events are short lived
and don't happen often even in the monsoon season/flash flood season.
Triple digit summer temperatures are not so bad if they're 100-103.  The
magic number tends to be 104 ... it's just a degree but it tends to tip
the comfort scale.  Normally, the locals don't complain about "the
heat"; it's the tourists who have never been to a desert in the summer
and who when hit by hot wind exclaim, "it's HOT!!!!!!".  Yes, it is hot.
And then comes the "cold winter days" when the tourists don't believe
that it gets cold here in the winter because the temperatures aren't
COLD, like where they live.  But they come and you can hear them saying,
"I didn't know it gets so COLD here!!  I thought this was a desert!!"
hahaha .....   ;-)

> PWC on Lake Mead sounds like fun.

It's always hotter over on the lake.  Lots of PWC.  But it also gets
windy in a hurry out there.

I live at an elevation of about 2600 feet which is higher than the Strip
(valley floor) by a few hundred feet.  It tends to be just a little
cooler here, but only a couple degrees or so.  However, about 30 minutes
up the highway, you can be on Mt. Charleston where it is usually about
20-30 degrees cooler than anywhere in The Valley.  It's a popular
ski-snowboard destination because it's so close.  In the summer it's a
destination to escape the heat ... also because it's so close!  ;-)

> Are there any fish in that there body of water ? <hehe>

See the link at the top of this post.  The fish are likely jumpin'.
