Diet and the "TMJ" patient

Thread rating:  |
The Webby - 08 Jul 2008 07:27 GMT In the thread, "NTI continued", the discussion has taken its most recent turn into the realm of dietary difficulties.
I'm going to be away from my "desk" for a week or so beginning tomorrow. It is my suggestion that you all consider the value of a good, long discussion about diet and the "TMD" patient. When I return, I'll be more than happy to participate in this thread; I have decades of experiences that might be useful to others.
Catch you all soon.

It doesn't matter what your "diagnosis" is if what you have is a *problem* eating because your jaw just doesn't seem to "work" normally.

I'll work on this asap; have some plans for a few hours now. Please let me/us know if there are any foods in particular that you really *dislike* so we can eliminate those right up front. Ok?

First of all, jerm, it's important to understand your personal challenges or obstacles. We assume a few things in the beginning:
1. No dietary restrictions associated with religion, personal philosophies, or allergies.
2. You are not a finicky eater.
3. You are bored with your present routine and would appreciate some ideas.
~~~~~~~
For today, would you mind sharing with us what you ate all day yesterday. It doesn't matter whether it was a "normal food day". Let's just begin with that. If you can remember what you did yesterday, we can let it begin with today's meals.
Try to comment about whether you ate. (Alone at home, with friends in a home, restaurant, or wherever...)
yesterday had oatmeal for breakfast, than a smoothie later, then had some seared salmon for dinnner.
You need to be a little more specific, jerm. Use the bullet list below and fill in the blanks, so to speak, please.
Breakfast:
Oatmeal quantity? Milk? Sugar? Fruit juice? (orange or other?)
Morning snack:
Nothing??? Why not smoothie? Why not something of a nutritional drink (weight gain type)?
Lunch:
Was the smoothie your lunch? What was in the smoothie?
Afternoon snack:
Nothing???
Dinner:
Seared salmon (that's a good choice!). Do you know how many ounces of salmon?
Nothing else with the salmon? Maybe some mashed potatoes, soup,
Evening snack:
Ice cream?
~~~~~~
First, my point is that you need to eat *something* often throughout the day. If you don't feel hungry, that's not a reason to miss your "meal times". Oh, and I realize that yesterday was just one day; it might not have been the day that best represented how much you normally eat but it was a day... and we need to make all the days count for what they are worth.
Also, have you lost or gained weight in the past months with all this going on?
Can you please respond to the above points for me in your next post?
Thanks, Webby

and i ate the salmon alone, a pretty big piece though.

What is your *single most significant difficulty* with eating?
(Don't tell me two things.)

So, no real pain while eating, except for the tightness in my jaw and small opening. But I havent even had a snap in 3 weeks, as ive been careful.

And then after you're finished, do you have the spasms as you do after chewing?
Beginning tomorrow, write down what you eat (and the times) and at the end of the day, post it. We'll get you some good ideas tomorrow. Keep your chin up.

The Webby - 27 Jul 2008 17:00 GMT I'm going to start a new thread that is meant to include menu items and eating techniques to minimize chewing effort. If pain is not caused by swallowing, then the techniques offered should be helpful.

You don't need to open "that wide" when you eat either! You just need to learn some new techniques.
So, what have you eaten so far today, and how did you manage?

If you have roommates, this presents a complexity not otherwise figured into your situation (by me). I hope you're able to see/read the newest thread concerning this subject.
I don't want to post to this *long* thread again. It's becoming unmanageable for anyone except the post to post reader. Let's make use of "Expanding menu options for jaw-pain patients" instead.
