I couldn't take any of the usual cholesterol lowering drugs because
they didn't agree with me. My doctor recommended red yeast rice
extract. I take 2 1200 mg capsules per day. After 6 months, my
cholesterol went from 181 to 116. I also take fish oil.

red yeast rice extract IS a statin (cholesterol lowering drug)--it
contains Mevacolin K, same ingredient as in Mevacor, albeit a lower
amount....actually, the amount of mevacolin in different RYR
preparationsis mostly unknown because there is no standardardization
of the product.....

Why would you want to lower you cholesterol?  A total cholesterol
between 180 and 200 is optimum.  Below 160 and deaths from all causes
start to increase very significantly.
