When I have been taking my blood pressure using an automatic OMRON device, I
have been getting very variable readings. To check, I used a more standard
sphygmomanometer setup with a cuff, a stethoscope, and aneroid pressure
gage. I will be the first to admit that my skill in doing so leaves room for
improvement.

I noticed that as I reduce pressure, I get the ticking sound at a fairly
high pressure of 180 torr (mm of mercury), that goes away at about 160 and
comes back again at about 140. Then as pressure is reduced it goes away
again at about 90. Is this something that happens? Is my technique bad? What
can I do to improve it?

I cam understand why such couble response could confuse automatic equipment.

This is known as an "auscultatory gap" and indicates hardening of the
arteries in the arm.

Yes.

No.

No improvement necesssary.

You will need to make sure that your OMRON BP machine is set to
inflate sufficiently to avoid the "ausculatory gap" in order to give
more consistent measurement.

180/90 is too high and the "auscultatory gap" is a concern.  Would
suggest you inform your doctor about it.

See, Chung, can answer a medical question as a doctor, but then later
will use his being a "doctor" to promote his Satanic 2 pound EVIL
Approach.

May you have a clinically depressing Kwanzaa.
