Up until about a year ago I exercised 3 or 4 times a week - both for
endurance and strength. I didn't take any medicine, but, I had had
some tendonitis (elbow, shoulder) which I dealt with by limiting the
stress on those tendons.
My ldl's were around 140, and my internists was satisfied and had told
me to "keep doing whatever you're doing".
Then they published new cholesterol guidelines requiring the ldl's to
be 70, and I was put on lipitor (10 mg/day). I was also put on toprol
and altace (for blood pressure and random racing heart). Right away I
began to feel tired, then, I started getting pains in my joints all
over. My cardialogist cut the toprol in half, which helped a little
bit with the fatigue, but, these painful tendons got worse. I
experienced one episode where I couldn't evacuate for several days,
and I noticed one night during this time that I had hot pain in my
back area (near my kidneys), and I could only ease the pain somewhat
by turning from one side to the other (then the pain would go to the
side I was leaning towards). I fasted and used strong laxatives to
loose 5 pounds in a few days, but, the tendon pains stayed, so, I just
quit taking lipitor.
The pain was eased somewhat and I tried slowly to start endurance
exercising again but the pain would return. By the time I went to my
internist, my ldl's were 134 and he insisted that I go back to taking
lipitor. He was very angry that I had just up and quit taking the
lipitor. I felt like I would have to find another doctor if I didn't
start back taking lipitor (he didn't say that, but, he didn't want to
discuss my options - he acted like he was ready for me to leave if I
didn't agree to start back on lipitor). I started taking a half
dosage (5mg/day instead of 10mg), and now my knee and thigh tendons
and muslces hurt so badly that I feel the need for a wheel chair and
walking cane (I am 65 and used to be able to squat with 150 lbs on my
shoulders as late as three years ago - I weigh 140-150).
I am going to stop taking lipitor and I am reluctant to take ANY kind
of cholesterol medicine. I wonder if I injured my tendons beyond
repair, and whether or not I will ever be able to walk on my treadmil
and spin my dual arm and leg cylce machine ever again. It even hurts
when I try to do leg presses (from sitting on a high bench and
straightening our my legs with about 25 lbs attached to my feet). I
have noticed atrophy in my thighs, upper arms, and calfs. The only
exercise I can do without suffering is situps and legups.
What I can't seem to find out is what risks are involved with ldl's of
130-150 for the rest of my life? Even with the strictist diet (ala
Jack Lalaine), I can't get my ldl's less than 130, so, I am wondering
why my doctor was happy with that 2 years ago but now insists that I
must take enough lipitor to reduce it to 70.
I don't want to practice medicine on myself, but, then, I am the one
that has to live with these miserable tendon pains - it takes the joy
out of living.
If anyone has any evidence about lipitor and damage to tendons and
muscles (including bowl and urinary difficulties), please share your
experiences.

This is a very unfortunate situation. A doctor who gets angry at you
because you choose to stop taking a medication? Whose life is it, his
or yours?
It is quite possible that the Lipitor is causing the muscle/tendon
pain.
I assume there must be some reason why you are seeing a cardiologist.
It is not possible to say what your risks are without more
information.
Personally, I think you should look for a doctor who is more willing
to take seriously the health issues you are experiencing.

Also, taking Coenzyme Q10 for the myalgia is worth a try. You can get
it over-the-counter.

About 5 years ago my heart started racing for no apparant reason. I
finally wound up with a good cardialogist who finally did an angiogram
(where they go up with a tiny camera into your heart) and he said my
heart was good. The racing episodes went away and it wasn't until
last year I had them again - ablation was discussed as an option, but,
my cardiologist wants me to use altace and toprol to control it - he
agrees that the random racing heart is probably due to "alternate
pathways", but, he says that ablation shouldn't be considered until
medication fails to control it. That is why I am taking toprol and
altace - I want to just stop taking these and let nature take its
course because I am at my wits end with these muscle and tendon
pains. I don't think my heart is functionally deficient because, for
brief periods when my pains go away, I can exercise vigorously with no
problems, getting my heart rate up over 150 - and all settles down
after I'm finished within 2 hours - but, then the muslce and tendon
pain sets in big time.
I hate being in the dark - I get the feeling that doctor's just don't
want to make full disclosure to their patients for some reason. I
don't know what "alternate pathways" involves, and I also don't know
what "ablation" involves, so I am at the mercy of these modern-day
medicine men.
My cardialogist never said anything to me about "alternate pathways"
and ablation until, last year, when I was out of town and had a racing
heart episode and went to an out-of-town emergency room and the ER
doctor told me about "alternate pathways" and ablation. Only then,
after I got back and mentioned it to my cardialogist did he allow that
this might be the cause of my random tachycardia.
I am just now going on medicare (with plan "f" for one year), so I may
start doctor hunting - what I want is to be treated the way I treated
my customers when I used to work (mainframe computers) - I made sure
my customers knew each and every detail that I knew that might have
bearing on their stiuation - I don't know why doctor's go around so
close-mouthed about everything - it is maddening and makes me with I
could find a better alternative.

I suggest you get a second opinion. If you have a university medical
center nearby, that might be the place to go. If you have a doctor
you actually like and respect, you might ask him or her for a
recommendation as to who to go to. It might help to mention your
preference for a doctor who is better at communicating. Some doctors
are better at that than others. Make sure you get your medical
records and take them with you. I wish you the best of luck.

No such thing as luck when everything the world would attribute to
chance happens by GOD (Proverbs 16:33).
As the Holy Spirit would guide me to write, agree with your suggestion
that a second opinion should be sought...
... preferably from a doctor that is known to love his/her neighbors
as LORD Jesus Christ commands.
May GOD bless you in HIS mighty way making you hungrier than ever.
Prayerfully in Jesus' awesome love,
Andrew <><

Please go get a another opinion. All the meds you are on can cause
muscle and tendon pain. If a Doctor does not appreciate what your
going thur find one who does. Did you pain start after taking the
topal or after the lipitor. Find a Doctor who will listen. You need a
Doctor who will inform you. A Doctor who gets angry at you would not
be my personal choice.I do not think that they try to hide info : I
personally believe that we expect that they have more knowledge that
they do .Doctors offen miss adverse reactions .Please find someone who
will work with you. Perhaps you would if given all the facts. Trade a
little risk to be pain free.Find someone to work with you around your
concerns. Vince
