Those of us in the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) Statin
Effects Study group, headed by Dr. Beatrice Golomb, are conducting a
research study to learn more about the side effects and symptoms of
cholesterol-lowering medications, including statins. Though statins
are the best selling prescription drugs in the world, and have
important benefits, there has been little attention to their adverse
effects.
Information provided by people who may have had adverse experiences on
statins/cholesterol drugs will help us greatly to better understand
these adverse effects - their character, impact, time course, recovery
pattern, what factors may increase or reduce risk of developing them;
and what factors may favor (or not) their recovery. It may also help
us better educate doctors who care for patients.
If there is a chance you might be willing to help this effort by
sharing your experience in a survey, please contact us at
statinstudy@ucsd.edu or (858) 558-4950 x215 for a copy, or access our
online survey at http://www.statineffects.com. We would truly
appreciate your help.
If you know of anyone else who may have experienced adverse effects on
statins and may be interested in participating in our study, perhaps
you might be willing to pass on our contact information, and let them
know their input can be of great help to us.
Please do not hesitate to contact us for other information about our
research regardless of whether you decide to participate in our
study.
Thank you for your time - and thank you in advance for your help,
should you choose to provide it. We look forward to hearing back from
you, and are grateful for your possible participation in this
important research.
Sincerely,
Marvin Hanashiro, Project Manager

It seems to me I heard somewhere that UCSD Statin Study wrote in article

Will you have a control group, perhaps of people who have NOT had
adverse effects? If not, what is your plan for deriving data on the
incidence of adverse effects among statin users?

Hi,
I took a mix of lipitor and norvasc for about 8 months. In the mean time
for the last year I've been having a weak feeling in my legs,
walking, climbing stairs and getting up and down. Dr. thought at first I had
Polymyalgia R. and put me on prednisone. Didn't seem to help, in the mean
time again my cardiologist put me on Caduet. My Md decided since the
prednisone wasn't helping me he sent me to a Rheumatologist..He thinks I
have Polymyositis. Only thing is he is waiting for the Lipitor to get out of
my system to see if that has any effect on my weakness. I went through the
EMG and Nerve Conduction test and they came out fine..Rheumy wants to wait 6
weeks and I have about 2 to go before I have other test..He said sometimes
it takes 2 to 3 months for it to get out of the system.
I'm afraid I can't tell you much. It's hard to tell if I feel any
difference as I have good days and bad days, but when I started the Caduet
I thought I had gotten worse...
I can let you know if in 2 wks. if there is any change...
