Effects of telmisartan on fat distribution in individuals with the

Disease Center, Tomishiro Chuo Hospital, Okinawa, Japan.
BACKGROUND: Visceral fat obesity plays an essential role in the
clustering of atherosclerotic multiple risk factors in the metabolic
syndrome. Telmisartan, an angiotensin II type 1 receptor blocker, has
partial agonistic properties for peroxisome proliferator-activated
receptor gamma, which is a key regulator of adipocyte differentiation
and function. METHODS: This study aimed to clarify the impact of
telmisartan on fat distribution and insulin sensitivity in the
metabolic syndrome. In this open-label, prospective, randomized study,
patients with the metabolic syndrome (waist circumference: men >/= 85
cm, women >/= 90 cm) were treated either with amlodipine (n = 26) or
with telmisartan (n = 27) for 24 weeks, and fat distribution and
insulin sensitivity were determined. RESULTS: Systolic and diastolic
blood pressure were decreased in both groups to a comparable level.
However, insulin and glucose levels during an oral 75 g glucose
loading were decreased only in the telmisartan group. The visceral fat
area, determined by abdominal computed tomography scan, was reduced in
the telmisartan group after 24 weeks' treatment, but the subcutaneous
fat area did not change in either group. CONCLUSION: The results imply
that telmisartan could treat both the hemodynamic and metabolic
aberrations seen in patients with the metabolic syndrome, improving
insulin resistance and glucose intolerance at least partly through
visceral fat remodeling.

Actually, the results of this study show how it is the visceral fat
(aka visceral adipose tissue or VAT) that causes insulin resistance
IR. The telmisartan alters the amount of VAT thereby ameliorating the
IR and not the other way around.

Now if it is not by it's action as an insulin sensitizer that it
causes Vat to disappear then by what mode do you purpose

The VAT does not disappear but the ratio of VAT/SAT changes because of
changes in gene regulation. The inflammatory cytokines from VAT is the
proximate cause of insulin resistance (IR).
It remains wiser to make the VAT disappear by eating less down to the
optimal amount:

You know there was a very interesting article about insulin being the
cause of inflamation and hypertension I"ll find it and post it..
Several atudies have also show that atenolol indeed causes a increase
in insulin resistance. I posted them earlier. Do you still think that
atenolol does not cause insulin resistance.

Adrenergic blockade increases appetite making people hungrier.
For those who falsely believe that hunger is a warning that they are
low in energy, there will be a compulsion to overeat.
It is the overeating that causes the formation of visceral adipose
tissue (VAT) which in turn cause insulin resistance as the references
you have cited have shown.
May GOD bless you in HIS mighty way.
