AV node ablation

My mother is a 68 y/o WF with chronic AF.  She had it under control for 10
years using Pacerone until a biopsy of her liver showed sclerosis.  Then she
was put on Betapace and Cardizem which are both maxed out and she is still
having AF.  She was recently hospitalized for stent placement and pacemaker.
Now they want to do a AV node ablation.  I'm not sure this is what she needs.
Of course the Dr's want to do this and she's ready for anything that will
stop her from feeling so bad during an episode.  I've researched this and I'm
not sure I want her to have it done. The short term risks are low, but has it
been done long enough to know what the long term risks are.  Such as
ventricle damage, CHF, or sudden death.  Has there been enough of these
procedures done to know what the long term risks are?   I wonder why they
aren't trying Digoxin and Pacerone again.  Her liver enzymes are in normal
range and she takes Milk thistle which I credit for the return to normal.  I
guess my main concern is the ablation and long term effects.  Any help here
would be great.  She's scheduled for 12/27/06.  Please help.  Thanks

Yes it has been.

Ablating the AV node does not cause either ventricle damage, CHF, or
sudden death.

Yes, enough AV node ablations have been done.

You have written that your mom has been having adverse reactions to her
medications.

Others would credit this to stopping the Pacerone.

Thanks so much for the help.  She decided to cancel the AV node ablation for
now and continue with the Betapace and Cardizem.  She wants to see if maybe
she just hasn't given the meds enough time.  As of today she has gone 7 days
without an attack, which is great for her as she was having them every other
day.  I just wanted to ask you is there were any long term side effects to
being on Betapace and Cardizem?  And do you think eventually the meds will
wear off and she will have to have the ablation anyway.  Thanks again for
your excellent help.

None that would be anticipated.

Typically these medications will have to be increased if there is
weight gain and/or other changes that decrease their serum half-life.

Again, would redirect your thanks and praises upward to my heavenly
