Genetic and lifestyle influence on CVD risk factors

Hello,

I'm looking for a resource (review or other) which estimates how much
of the variation in measurements of CVD risk factors is genetically
determined, and which percentage could be accounted for by lifestyle.

Risk factors I'm especially interested in are the inflammation markers
such as oxLDL, IL6, C-reactive protein(, fibrinogen),...

All info is welcome!

Thanks a lot,
Tim

The latter as CVD risk factors are entirely the result of visceral
adipose tissue.

You are welcome, Tim.

All thanks and praise belong to the LORD, Whom I love with all my
being.

According to the World Health Organization WHO and Harvard researchers 80
percent of premature heart disease can be prevent by life style changes such
as nutrition, weight control, exercise and not smoking. That might tell
something about the role of genetics in relation to life style factors.

Here is a slide about the relative importance of different risk factors.

Of these the one "life style" factor that is growing the most rapidly
into a bigger problem in this world is the excessive visceral
adiposity, which can only be addressed by eating less and becoming
hungrier.

There is a potentially important subarea in lifestyle, which has been
largely ignored: the effect of fetal and childhood nutrition to the
risk of chronic diseases, mainly CVD, in adulthood. David Barker has
researched this a lot. Before he was mostly ignored, but recent data
has given some credibility to his research. He has published a lot,
here a smaple of references related to his research:

"... Low-grade systemic inflammation seen in hypertension seems to
have its origins in the perinatal period and availability of
adequate amounts of LCPUFAs during the critical periods of brain
growth prevents the development of hypertension. This indicates
that preventive strategies aimed at decreasing the incidence of
hypertension and its associated conditions such as
atherosclerosis, type 2 diabetes, coronary heart disease (CHD),
and cardiac failure in adulthood need to be instituted during the
perinatal period if they are to be effective."

"... LCPUFAs suppress angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE)
activity, reduce angiotensin II formation, enhance eNO generation,
and suppress TGF-beta expression. Perinatal supplementation of
LCPUFAs decreases insulin resistance and prevents the development
of hypertension in adult life, whereas deficiency of LCPUFAs in
the perinatal period results in raised blood pressure later in
life. Patients with essential hypertension have low concentrations
of various LCPUFAs in their plasma phospholipid fraction. Based on
this, it is proposed that LCPUFAs serve as endogenous regulators
of ACE activity, O(2)(-*), eNO generation, and TGF-beta
expression. Further, LCPUFAs have actions similar to statins,
inhibit (especially omega-3 fatty acids) cyclooxygenase activity
and suppress the synthesis of proinflammatory cytokines, and
activate the parasympathetic nervous system, all actions that
reduce the risk of major vascular events. Hence, it is proposed
that availability of adequate amounts of LCPUFAs during the
critical periods of growth prevents the development of
   hypertension in adulthood."
