Fasting Cholesterol vs. Random Cholesterol

My wife recently got her cholesterol checked.  It was 199 which sounded
a bit high to me.  Yes I know that technically <200 is desirable, but
199 is higher than expected.  She rides her bike to work everyday and
we eat fairly healthily.

When she went to the doctor, the doctor said that she would like the
blood tests but not to worry about fasting.  So the number that we got
was not fasting.  The appointment was around lunch time, but neither of
us can remember whether she had had lunch, but she had definitely eaten
breakfast that morning.

Can anyone tell me how cholesterol varies with recent meals?  Should I
really be worried?  199 sounds high for a 27 year old woman.

Bill, thanks for the reference.  I did take the quiz and was as 'very low
risk' -- however I do have significant cardiac artery disease -- at least I
have had a lot of blockages.  My history includes 5 CABG's in 1998, stenting
in Dec '03 and Jan '04, another stent in June '06, and a balloon opening in
July '06 (just last week).  In addition I take several medications relative
to my heart (statin, beta blocker, calcium channel blocker, nitrate, and
aspirin.  So, I do not think the test on that web page means much in my
case.  In fact, my total cholesterol is only 152, and my LDL is only 92 at
last test.  I would be interested to see how others fare on the test.

So we go from a 27 year old woman with a total of 199 to a guy with a
CABG 5  in a heart beat.  I'd look into psychological help.

You will no longer warrant my attention.

The 27 year old woman is his wife, like he wrote in his first posting.

You seem to have missed the fact that you were responding to
two different individuals (above).

About that psychological help, go ahead and look into it.
