I have been walking carrying a 5 pound weight in each hand. I walk about 2
miles per day. I have a small blocked artery going to my heart and take
isosorbide for the pain (among other pills for BP and cholesterol).
Occasionally I get a some pain in the chest while walking with the weights,
normally there is very little or none. Does this sound safe to do and will
this curtail more blockage of arteries (assuming I eat OK most of the time)?
Thanks.

The hand weights are unwise especially in someone with coronary
disease. They will increase strain on the heart without the benefit of
stimulating the development of collateral arteries.

The use of hand weights will increase your BP during your walks.

Again, would suggest you lose the hand weights and increase the
duration of walks as tolerated.

You are welcome.

I would think the more I work out the better shape I would be in. And enable
me to lose weight (I'm about 15 pounds overweight). Carrying the weights
gives me no more chest pain than walking without them. Thanks.

Working out with weights does not improve cardiovascular fitness.

Would suggest you ask your doctor to supervise your using the 2PD-OMER
Approach to help you lose weight safely and permanently without
dieting.

They would still place undue strain on your heart without benefit
either to promote weightloss or collateral artery formation.

Again, you are welcome with your thanks redirected heavenward.

If this is of concern for you discuss it with your doctor. Ask about a
stress test using the weights to get the best answer to your concern about
the effect.

The five pound weights may simply be stressing your chest muscles and
the pain reflects a skeletal muscle pain rather than a heart pain. A
more professional evaluation could tell you if your heart is ischemic
under exercise stress (a nuclear stress test). If you already have
known coronary disease you would be wise to have it evaluated rather
than simply piling on challenges.
Exercise is generally good but nobody can realistically predict the
course of CVD for an individual because many known and unknown risk
factors contribute to progression of the disease - Jim Fixx ran 70 miles
a week, had an HDL of 70-80 and still died of a heart attack at 52
(incidentally he ran through pain instead of being evaluated which is
akin to what you are doing). Exercising, diet drugs etc. will reduce
your risk & are all preferable to not exercising, bad diet or not taking
advantage of available therapies.

It sounds like this is something you want to talk to your doctor about.
