Lipitor initially reduced my cholesterol levels. I changed my diet and am
excercising . I dropped 30 pounds. How and when do I know when I can stop
taking this drug?

"Statins...have been shown repeatedly to be the most effective way to lower
cholesterol and to prevent heart attacks.  Even more important, statins are
extremely well tolerated with very few patients complaining of side effects
or intolerance.  The safety profile of statins is irrefutable and they are
currently the number one class of new prescriptions written daily."

If you are taking a statin just for general cholesterol lowering I see no
reason why you couldn't stop taking it, in discussion with your doctor of
course. Have bloodwork done in 6-8 weeks to see if there's any dramatic
change.

So, how did you drop 30 pounds? I'd like to lose 10!

With an opening like that you could drive a 2pd-omer through...

Listener, you know what's required to lose weight; over the long haul,
take in fewer calories than you expend.

Then you are eating less. If you are using the 2PD-OMER Approach, you
know how much less.

You can always choose to stop taking any medication.  However, your
doctor is your advisor on such matters as to when.  Typically, those
who have been prescribed Lipitor have a goal of lowering LDL below 100
mg/dL.  If this is the stated goal for you then your doctor likely will
not suggest a trial of going without until your LDL is less than 100
mg/dL.
