I have been diagnosed as having cardiomyeopathy on the basis of an
echocardiogram showing an EF of 25%.  I have never been given a BNP test.
Is the echo the best test?

Although the BNP test is sensitive it is not specific for CHF. You can also
see elevations in cirrhosis and in nephrosis.
It is a good way in monitoring therapy also.
