I have a good total cholestrl coutn of 100, but my HDL is only 33
(ldl=41, TRIG=131)

Is the total CHL/HDL ratio of 3 reasonably normal or should i try to
elevate theHDL?...I walk briskly 30 minutes/day 3-4 days a week.

HISTORY

CAD- Thallium EST in Jan 04 showed a reversible ischmia - estimated
50% blockage, but  A Feb cath showed good flow and no need for stent
or other itnervention..I am on Zocor and tenormin for HTN

IDA - Have had SOB & DOE for 8 years,...4 sets of EGD's and
colonoscopies and small bowel folllow-throughs from 1996-2004 showed
nothing more than some gastritis and diverticulosis...but a capsule
endoscopy done in August showed 3 sites of small bowel ulceration
which has been attributed t my dailt 81mg dose of ASA prescribed by my
cardiologist 2 years ago.

My gastroenterologist, my cardiologist and my hematologist all agree
that I should stay on the ASA and deal with the blood loss via oral
iron supplementation with monitoring of my cbc's, iron and ferritin
every 2 months in the Hematology Clinic

TC/HDL of 3 is good. Better than normal :)

Yes, TC/HDL of 3 is very good - however, an HDL of 33 is an
independent risk factor.  Exercising more, a drink a day (unless
contraindicated), and replacing some carbs with "good" fats (olive
oil, other non-saturated), and avoiding trans-fats (processed foods,
some margarines).

The HDL is not optimal especially for someone with known CAD.

You remain in my prayers, dear Mirek whom I love.

With your history, everyone should want your HDL optimally greater than
50.

Why did they recommend against the option of Plavix (clopidogrel) to
replace the aspirin?

They recommended against plavix as a sub for ASA because its
cardioprotective properties haven't been shown to be as good as ASA
and even with Plavix there is evidence that it causes problems in
patients who are actively bleeding.

Would suggest you seek a second opinion about this.
