I'm female, 42 reasonably fit and my resting (just sitting at the
computer) heart rate seems to run about 80-90bpm.  Is this normal??
Also, when I exercise my heart rate stays elevated (in the 90's)
around 1/2 to a hour afterwards.  Is this normal as well or am I
freaking out?

Technically, a heart rate between 60 and 90 is "normal."

Whether it is "normal" for you depends on what has been happening in
your past.

That would be considered a bit fast.

Would suggest you inform your doctor.

Are you sure sitting at the computer qualifies as relaxed? For instance,
I often run into the 90s while responding to trolls, but my usual
resting HR is around 80. Likewise, I'm always around 90 when I'm getting
a checked by a doctor. On the other hand, lying down and relaxing or
meditating, my HR drops to 60 or bellow (I had a 55 reading a few
times). With a bit of training, I'm now dropping in the 70s while
standing up, as long as I try to relax.
Maybe your problem is just stress related. Do you experience anxiety or
stress lately? Have you tried stress management methods?
Anyway, that's something to check with your doctor...

It's probably normal; resting heart rate depends to some extent on
fitness level, current circumstances (worry, concentration on a task,
stress, lack of sleep, that kind of thing), and individual physiology.
My own RHR is very low (35 - 40), below what some doctors consider
normal, but my cardiologists have never questioned it or done anything
about it.

Recovery from exercise depends very much on fitness, as well as on the
length of time and the intensity of the preceding exercise.  Again,
individual physiology will be a factor.  But note that a rate staying in
the 90s after exercise is not that different from your resting rate of
80 - 90; you probably shouldn't expect it to drop much lower.  What kind
of initial drop do you get from the rate *during* exercise?  The major
drop should occur within the first few minutes after you finish the
exercise, but marathoners, for instance, may still have some elevation
for an hour or two after the race.

The bottom line question is probably whether you have any symptoms or
concerns about the rates.  If you do, by all means have a checkup to
find the problem or to ease your mind.

Interesting. My resting heart rate is 43-48. At max exercise, one-half
hour after, it used to be high 70s. Lately, after a 25 minute heart
rate walk it is around 100. I take no meds. And frequently have missed,
skipped and palpitation like beats. Offered for comparison...

You need to know your resting heart rate. A resting hr over 80 isn't
good. Sitting at your computer can elevate it.
