Stages of death related to cancer

I was hoping to obtain information on the stages of death.  My husband
was diagnosed with a bladder tumor and had it removed early October.  A
few days later, the Dr. called us in to his office said it had moved
into the wall and the bladder would have to be removed.  Within 3 weeks
time, he lost weight was unable to eat due to a sore throat and was
waiting for his next scheduled surgery.  I called for a transport to
the ER, after he was admitted, endless test done, we were told the
cancer had metastized and was in his spine, hip, muscle tissue, a tumor
in his stomach area and one against the esophagus.

So, he is now at home with hospice care.  It has only been 2 weeks and
has changed medicine (for pain) twice.  He is now on methadone which
helps along with Xanax (which he has always taken).  He seems to be
going fast, urine is mostly blood and sleeps most of the time.  Weight
is about 100 lbs, from 160.  He of course is malnuritioned and
dehydrated, although he drinks water all the time.

My question is, can anyone tell me what kind of time limit I may be
looking at.  The oncologist at the hospital said - 2 months to a year.
He doesn't look like he will make another month to me.  I don't want to
be crude, I'm losing the love of my life after 25 years, I just would
like to know where I stand.

Thanks for any help.

Hello Ruby,
I'm sorry to hear about your husband.
My father-inlaw had bladder cancer. He had been urinating blood for at
least 6 months, before he could no longer function. He was undiagnosed,
since he feared doctors all his life.
As I recall (and it was many years ago), he collapsed and was
hospitalized/immobile, he passed away within a month, perhaps less in your
husband's situation.
The closer to death, the easier it is to tell. Hospice should be able to
apprise you on a week-week, and eventually day-day basis.

Some things to watch for are circulatory changes in his feet (I found out
when my Dad died). The last week or so, they start changing to darker
colour.  Dad's heart was strong, so he was with us longer.

Other things to watch for may be mentioned here. This will surely give you
better understanding..

Feel free to join us on alt.support.cancer. There's lots there to send you
support, kind words and lots of hugs.
Mike Radcliffe also reads and posts there and may have input. He's been
giving hospice care for many years.

Yes, I noticed the CNA looking very closely at his feet.  His regular
nurse went on vacation so we will be seeing a different one today.
Truthfully J, I have been scared to ask, but feel it's time since
things seem to be going downhill.

I can appreciate your father, beside this illness my husband has never
really been sick, except to say, a backache and would not hear of going
to the doctor....
Thank you for the link - I will read this weekend.

It's almost impossible to be accurate for an individual. However, from what
you say, days to weeks is more likely than weeks to months
