I'm a 56 year old woman with stage 3 breast cancer. I have been receiving
neoadjuvant chemo consisting of 4 AC treatments followed by 4 Taxotere
treatments. I will have my 4th and final Taxotere treatment tomorrow, then
it's on to surgery, radiation, Herceptin, Arimidex.....and hopefully I get
to stay on this planet for a while longer.
Since I've been taking Taxotere, I have gotten *severe* edema in my legs.
My oncologist had told me swollen ankles were a possible side effect, but my
legs are swollen from the tips of my toes clear up to my hips. My feet and
ankles feel like they are going to split apart from the pressure, and the
skin near my ankles started to break down. Walking is very difficult.
Getting in and out of a car is difficult. Squatting down to get something
from a bottom shelf is difficult.
I have been wearing elastic stockings and elevating my legs whenever
possible; I sleep with my legs on a pile of pillows every night. The doctor
prescribed 20 mg. of Lasix a day, which was ineffective. She increased it
to 40 mg., still ineffective. She increased it to 60 mg., *still*
ineffective. At this point she sent me for an echocardiogram. The results
came back normal. My blood levels are good. The doctor more or less threw
up her hands and advised me to take 40 mg. of Lasix a day from now on.
She then asked me if I wanted to forgo my last Taxotere treatment. I said
"NO!" As uncomfortable as I am, it is more important to me to kill as many
cancer cells as possible. But isn't there *something* I can do to get this
swelling down? And will it automatically go away when the Taxotere begins
to wear off?
Thanx for your advice

Well, the American Cancer Society says http://tinyurl.com/4v24t
Docetaxel is given by a shot in a vein over 1 hour, every 3 weeks, or in lower
doses, weekly. You will probably get another medicine, dexamethasone, to take
the day before and for 2 days after to lessen the chance you will get swelling
in your body. Also, you will probably get an antinausea medicine before the
docetaxel, especially if the medicine is given every 3 weeks. The dose depends
on your size, how well your liver is working, and how often the medicine is
given. Your blood counts will be checked before treatment; if they are too low,
the dose may be lowered or the treatment delayed. []
Medline mentions many possible reasons.
If you sit a lot, perhaps that's part of it? If you've gained weight, perhaps
part of it?
Salt?
I'm not giving advice (because I'm not a doctor) but perhaps you could ask why
she's trying lasix instead of a steroid?
Swelling is listed at Sloan Kettering
http://www.mskcc.org/patient_education/html/45791.cfm
(Late side effects.. so I assume, depending on the cause, it will eventually go
away, fater treatment stops and/or with a steroid?.)
Swelling of arms and legs, bloating, and weight gain may occur after receiving
docetaxel for several months. Fluid can also accumulate around the lungs or in
the abdominal cavity.[]
So it sure sounds like something to "nip in the bud" if possible, before it gets
more serious and spreads to the lungs.

I forgot this.

Sorry, I forgot that I was given 3 days of dexamethasone (steroid)....but it
was also ineffective.

Eva, I just checked the breast cancer newsgroup and you are also on Herceptin,
which carries a warning about swollen legs and heart failure.
http://cis.nci.nih.gov/fact/7_45.htm and that's my understanding of what Lasix
may be prescribed for. Heart failure doesn't go away. There are other possible
uses for Lasix. http://www.medicinenet.com/furosemide/article.htm
Continue as discussed with your oncologist and the stockings and resting your
legs, but you'll have to get your answers from her or get your test results and
go talk to your primary care physician. I'm sorry it's too complicated...

---------
I only had one dose of Herceptin. After I reported the swollen legs the
oncologist decided to hold the Herceptin until I complete the Taxotere.
Suspecting congestive heart failure, she sent me for this echocardiogram,
but as I said its results were normal.
I posted this here rather than in alt.support.cancer.breast because you had
mentioned there were doctors posting here, and I had hoped one of them could
give me some suggestions.
