My husband has NSCLC-advanced stage. First round of chemo was in July thru
Dec. 2002 with carboplatin & docetaxol. Then Iressa from Jan. 2003 to Dec.
2004. The tumor began to grow (2.3 to 2.6 cm.) so he began taking Tarceva
for about 6 weeks, at which point the tumor was scanned & showed it was
continuing to grow (to 2.9 cm.). He started more chemo thru April of 2005
taking Gemzar & Navelbine. The tumor grew again to 3.8 cm. & now he is
taking CDDP (cisplatin) on day 1, and CPT11 (camptosar) on days 1, 8, & 15
in a 28 day cycle. The oncologist suggested buying lactoferrin (with alpha
if possible) to give to my husband along with his meds. He is also a type
II diabetic on oral meds. I would like to know if anyone has had experience
with the lactoferrin & knows how it works with NSCLC. Is there any
difference between lactoferrin (I was told it is bovine colostrum) and human
breast milk/colostrum? Would they both work the same way on NSCLC? Also, I
tried to find lactoferrin in my area (Buffalo, NY) & could not. It does not
seem to be popular here. Does anyone know where I can buy it? Thanks for
your assistance.

Hello Kathi,
I think the oncologist who suggested it should answer your questions.
I see it's in clinical trials for advanced kidney cancer.
http://clinicaltrials.gov/ct/show/NCT00095186?order=1
There's lots of small cohort "promising" early phase clinical trials
One here http://www.asco.org/ac/1,1003,_12-002636-00_18-0026-00_19-002435,00.asp
The larger cohorts and Phase III trials are more telling (I think).
Some people do better in clinical trials; perhaps he wants to ask about that?
As long as he asks the goal; measuring for toxicity, symptom control, shrinking
a tumor etc
Actually it's used in trials for diabetes too
http://www.agennix.com/contentpages/newsandpressreleases.htm
So before expending too much time and money, perhaps it's best to ask what the
aim of his suggestion was?
If you'd like to join us on alt.support.cancer, please do.
There's also the ACOR mail lists. http://www.acor.org/mailing.html (maybe some
of them have tried it?) - click on L
Some participate with both support newsgroup and mail list.
best wishes,

Dear J,
Thank you for your input. I have read the linked articles, etc., & we will
be asking the oncologist many questions this week. Thanks again.

HOUSTON, April 19 /PRNewswire/ -- Agennix Incorporated announced
results from a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled,
multi-center Phase II clinical trial evaluating oral talactoferrin alfa
(talactoferrin), the Company's proprietary recombinant human
lactoferrin. Talactoferrin was combined with standard chemotherapy and
compared to placebo plus standard chemotherapy in first-line treatment
of advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). The data will be
presented today in a late breaking poster session at the 96th Annual
Meeting of the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) in
Anaheim.
The addition of oral talactoferrin to carboplatin/paclitaxel (C/P)
substantially enhanced the best overall response by CT scan using
RECIST criteria, which was the trial's primary endpoint. The confirmed
response rate in all 110 randomized intent-to-treat (ITT) patients
increased from 27% with placebo to 42% with talactoferrin, a 15%
absolute increase and a 56% relative increase. The confirmed response
rate in the 100 prospectively defined evaluable patients increased from
29% to 47% (p=0.05), an 18% absolute improvement and a 62% relative
improvement. Talactoferrin also appeared to be safe and well tolerated.
