My grandfather is 96 years old. He got oral cancer for 1 and half
years. From last month, the cancer is getting much worse suddenly,
with metastasis to right eye, bleeding in mouth and severe headache
etc.
We want to try Iressa for him, since currently no other special
method.
Could someone give us some suggestions: whether Iressa do has affect
on oral cancel, and whether there is any other medicine we can try, or
anything else we can do...
Thanks.

Hello Joyce,
I'm sorry to hear about your father's cancer.
A few months ago, I replied to someone "for heaven's sake, how long do you
expect your father to live anyway?"...my grandparents (3) all died in
their mid 90's and my mother in law just died at age 99.5.
Iressa...

_of_New_Lung_Cancer_Drug.asp>
The side effects were relatively mild and included mainly skin rashes,
diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting.
In about 40% of patients, the quality of life was improved by less
coughing and other breathing problems. (for lung cancer)
May Be Useful Against Other Cancers As Well
Several other kinds of cancer may be driven by EGFR, and Iressa is
currently being tested against breast, colorectal, prostate, and head and
neck cancers. < end quoted material from that web page>
"may" is a little, but important word.
Please forgive me for putting it like this, do you want your 96 year old
father to be a "guinea pig"?
Iressa won't help him see better.
I rather doubt that it would stop the bleeding. Anti-cancer drugs can also
make mouth tissue dry and irritated or cause the mouth to bleed. So he
could have nausea and vomiting (blood) and have to take other medications
to try and stop the nausea.
And not be able to eat. Is he currently eating?
There's clinical trials recruiting, so I guess they're just starting to
ask the questions about Iressa and head and neck and/or the trials have
been ongoing. So we don't have answers.
One (if not more) is measuring for toxicity. Look for details on each.
One of these is comparing one chemo to another.
Two are comparing Iressa with Iressa and another chemo.
One's talking about chemoradiation (chemo and radiation therapy)
I'll post the links. These are the only trials I found for head and neck
and Iressa.

http://www.clinicaltrials.gov/ct/show/NCT00080249?order=9
http://www.clinicaltrials.gov/ct/show/NCT00088907?order=15
http://www.clinicaltrials.gov/ct/show/NCT00024089?order=34
http://www.clinicaltrials.gov/ct/show/NCT00068497?order=39
If I recall, they are all recruiting and are to be followed for 2 - 5
years.
Read them carefully to make sure I got the facts right and anything else
that I might have missed that might be important to know.
I really don't think I would put my father or grandfather through that,
but everyone's different.
I'm sorry I don't know how to stop the bleeding either. Perhaps "hospice"
(palliative care at home by a nurse specialist) might know some tricks
about that and be able to troubleshoot your father's headache, so that he
doesn't have to have too many pain meds.
The headache could be from the eye involvement or what they call the TMJ
joint, is he's chewing crooked. There's a plastic appliance that dentists
make for that to be worn mostly during sleep, but since I'm not there, I
cannot say what is causing what.
Joyce, no matter what your father decides, please know that I'll try to be
here for you.
Come vent, ask questions, post updates.
I care. If I'm not here, perhaps other readers will reply to you.
My thoughts go with you in these difficult times and decisions.
