Two pads a day....

Well, six months plus later I am starting to see some improvement in the
incontinence department (can potency reappear soon thereafter???).  I wanted
to give this several days before saying anything, but for the most part this
week one pad has lasted me all day.  On Thursday and Friday I changed at
8:00 P.M. and then wore that one all night.  When I changed the pad it was
soiled, but maybe not to the point of leaking, but why take a chance.
Today was shopping, laundry, cleaning, etc., day, so I am on pad two
now, but the one I changed was not all that bad.  So even with standing,
stooping, lifting, I see improvement.  Thank Heaven!  I am beginning to
believe that this may actually end one of these days.  I was starting to
read about artificial sphincters thinking that was my future because this
hung on so long without any sign of improvement.
Speaking of improvement, my wife has been out of the cast for two weeks
now, and she is starting to walk, using the "boot", without the walker.  The
ankle is still very weak, and she cannot do anything without the support of
the boot, but this is still a lot better than always having to hop with the
walker.  Thanks to Upstairs for that one too.  The only question is what
does Buttercup have in store for us next???  I cannot see where the doggie
Prozac has done anything for her yet.
Have a good weekend everyone.  And a big Thank You to all of you that
have been supportive to me with this incontinence thing all these months.
   Thank you.

So glad to hear you are finally seeing some improvement, David!!  I know you
were reaching your frustration *saturation point*... (pun intended!)  I hope
this will only continue to improve for you and that you'll soon be without
the pads altogether.

You will have to admit... Buttercup has certainly helped to make your life
more *eventful* this past year! :P

My best to your lovely wife!!

Take care,
MikeH

Forgot to mention Kegels.  I did not intentionally stop doing the Kegel
exercises ("Kegelcises" as my uro calls them), but as things got busy at
work, <insert long list of excuses> I did stop doing them.  Forgot to do
them, during the day never thought to do them, not that I made a decision to
stop doing the exercises.  The point being that I am getting better sans
Kegels.  We cannot know for sure if I would have recovered sooner with the
exercises.
I'm an accountant, not a doctor, but for whatever it is worth I really
do think the incontinence has more to do with nerve damage than anything
else.  Just my opinion.  I know a lot of learned people recommend the
exercises, my doctor included, and I would not for a minute suggest that
someone stop doing them.  I would be interested to hear from others who had
problems with incontinence, more than the "normal" three months or so, and
who recovered without doing the Kegel exercises.  Just interested to see if
I am alone on this.
   Thank you.

It is great to hear of the improvement! This is a big change in the
leakage. You will likely see good continuing progress. It sounds
particularly good that things are better when you are standing and
active.
Good to hear your wife is making nice progress as well. All the stress
with your surgery, the two accidents your wife had and the pressure at
work probably combined to contribute to slowing gains on the
continence front. Before long now all will be back to normal.
Beware of the dog!

Dave I was also very slow to be padless and dry. Maybe even 8 months or so.
But eventually I did it.

Congratulations David S.

As you know, you and I have been moving along parallel tracks and
apparently still are.  On Saturday I put on a pad, drove to a rapid
transit station, took the train about 20 miles, walked another mile,
watched a college basketball game, walked to dinner and back to the
train and came home all on one pad.  Something I could not have done
two months ago.  Yesterday I golfed on a 3-par nine hole course and
did not start to leak until the 6th hole.  Anyway, also down to one or
two pads per day.

If you have read a couple of my recent posts you know how I feel about
Kegels.  Doing them in my opinion is like faith healing - lots of
ritual but no evidence they do a damned thing.

Take care,
Dave Perry

Great news for you, too, Dave P!!
Glad to hear you and David S are *both* seeing a difference in the
incontinence.
Continued improvement!!

At this point I am in envy of you guys.  I pulled my catheter out
today and am going through the pads like I owned the factory.  I have
to admit a couple of beers probably didn't help.  I am encouraged by
the fact that I can stop the stream mid stream and start again. Better
days are ahead.

Patience, John... it *will* get better!
When I first had my cath out, I leaked a lot.... but within a few days it
began to get better... and by the time I reached six weeks I was continent.
It takes different amounts of time for each of us.
On the *other* front, at 15 months post-op, there's no sign of life...
whereas some guys are fortunate enough to have that ability within a month
or so.  There's no way to tell... other than to just wait and see.

Take care!

After a couple of beers, I leak on every swing down to the 7-iron.  I don't
know it I should see my uro or the pro.

Sorry for any offense.  I will now seal my lips with regard to Kegels
(at least until someone figures out how to make money off them by
writing a book or going on the talk show circuit.)

Now there's a thought.  If they got upset about Janet's one boob think
of Letterman introducing Dr. Phil who will now demonstrate how to do Kegel
exercises...if the penis moves up and down you have the right muscles...and
next week Dr. Phil will demonstrate the proper technique for a digital
rectal exam....
