Catheter Removal

Has anyone attempted to remove the catheter themselves? I asked my
surgeon and he indicated that there is no reason one could not do it
themselves, in fact he has had patients who have done it with no
problems. Cut off the pigtail, let the saline solution drain out,
about 10cc, and it should slide out.  Sound simple doesn't it?

They x-rayed me first to make sure my urethra was healing sufficiently to
pull it out.

Why not? There are folks that use it on and off for many years.

JK,

Are there people who insert it themselves at home?  Or do they
have to see a doctor for that and only remove it themselves?

Hi, Alan....
I'm not jk... but yes, there are people who *catheterize* themselves on a
regular basis.  There has even been mention of it on this newsgroup by
people in the past who were having problems with bladder neck after surgery.
It's not something that sounds easy to do .... but... I never thought I'd
stick a needle in my penis, either!  And a couple of years ago, I was giving
myself weekly injections in the thigh with a two inch needle.  So I guess
it's possible to learn.... just hope I never have to.

Take care,
MikeH :)

John:

It is simple, and that's how it's done! My doc told me I could save a
trip and do it myself, so I did. The advantage of course, is you go as
slowly as you want and stop if it bothers you. I had a little stinging
(more lubricant might have fixed that), but really it just slipped out
easily.

been there and done that.
i would rather take it out myself
if it is ready to come out, do it yourself
the doctor can give you a shringe to remove the saline
from the catheter. I had no need to cut the pigtail...never
thought of it either.  This was for some kidney stone problems
I had a year ago.

you might want to see your doctor anyway with questions etc.
but you can take it out yourself and still go and see him!
