New "Mydoom" worm launching a world-wide attack

F-Secure is warning email users around the world about a new Windows
worm
which is spreading rapidly. The new worm, known as Mydoom or Novarg, is
spreading through email attachments and Kazaa file sharing networks.

The worm has launched a world-wide denial-of-service attack from every
infected computer against the website of SCO, one of the largest Unix
vendors
in the world. However, the WWW.SCO.COM site seems to be still
operational.

There's been a lot of discussion about SCO after they claimed last
December
that the Linux operating system was violating SCO's intellectual
property
rights in UNIX technology. "There are a lot of kids out there who feel
like
SCO's attacking them", comments Mikko Hypponen, Director of Anti-Virus
Research at F-Secure Corporation. "Apparently someone of them decided
that
it's ok attack back."

In addition of the denial-of-service attack, the worm also opens up a
backdoor to infected computers by listening to TCP port 3176. This way
the
worm author can gain access to infected computers afterwards.

The emails sent by the worm are fairly random:

From: <random email address>
To: <address of the recipient>
Subject: <random words>

Message body: (several different mail error messages, such as:)

Mail transaction failed. Partial message is available.

Attachment (with a textfile icon): random name ending with ZIP, BAT,
CMD,
EXE, PIF or SCR extension.

When a user clicks on the attachment, the worm will start Notepad,
filled
with random characters and it will immediately start to spread further.

Detailed technical description of the worm as well as screenshots are
available in the F-Secure Virus Description Database at
http://www.f-secure.com/v-descs/novarg.shtml

F-Secure Anti-Virus can detect and stop the Mydoom worm. F-Secure
Anti-Virus
can be downloaded from http://www.f-secure.com

F-Secure will also be releasing a free tool which can be used to remove
Mydoom from infected systems.

That would be YOURDoom, not MYDoom.

Another moment in history when I'm sooo happy to be a Macintosh user ...

Larry.......Macs get viruses too!!  Not many, but my daughter is a
graphic artist and has two of them......both G-Macs.  She has Norton on
her main one and practices 'safe hex' all de same, mon.  8-))

You may not get "infected" with a virus......but you sure as hell can
pass them on......(G)

Want a copy of the MAC FAQ from England by a fellow on the antivirus
news group??  Granted, you rarely get them.....but never say "never".

Cheers......a happy WinME user (who has had XP sitting here for a year
and not about to give up WinME for it......I plan to dual boot, maybe).

Giving is always better than receiving.

I like the odds better with my Macintosh We don¹t 55, 000+ viruses.

Chuckling here.......as an 'antivirus guru' I don't get infected either.
But I sure get lots thrown my way from the Genealogy Lists I run.  Been
lucky with this new one......I have trained 'my people' well and so far,
so good.

But getting a few emails from people who think they are infected.
NO....it is probably some other idiot who is and the virus 'raids' the
Address Books.   But according to the Press Releases I got, ONE IN TEN
emails were this virus yesterday.......sheesh!!

Off to do some genealogy.....

Cheers......Auntie Virus

I'm curious, Heather, were the viruses your daughter got written to
exploit Microsoft Office applications? If not, what OS does she use?

I would be interested in the FAQ, thanks. You can send it to me by
subsituting Hotmail for the munge above --- the otfiddler is real.

Thanks again,
Larry

When she first got her GMac (OS 9.2, I believe), some 2+ years
ago......she got whatever virus was going around at the time in the
Outlook Express mail programme.  I am not sure if she has MS Office on
there, probably but I will ask.  My mind left me earlier today, grin.
She has loads of those expensive ones like Illustrator and PhotoShop,
etc.

As you can't 'right click' and check Properties, I told her how to get
rid of it.......remember, she was new to computers and panicking a bit.
Must have been Bugbear because an attachment one she could delete, no
problem.  (there was HTML coding in the email, no attachment, for those
that don't remember Bugbear)

I shall dig out his last FAQ, but I warn you that it is LONG and it has
OLD information.  But I guess not that much changes with Macs.  I did
find some news groups for Macs when Elayne's hard drive was crashing and
they were quite helpful.  I will forward the link to your Hotmail
address, FWIW.....grin.

Tell her to ditch all the Micro$oft apps and she'll have no more viruses
until script kiddies decide to exploit AppleScript.

FYI: "ctrl + click" on a Mac produces a hierarchical menu similar to a
right-click on a PeeCee. Ctrl-click + Get Info equals right-click +
Properties.

I've been a MS user since I got rid of my TRS-80 Model 3.  I've never had a
virus.  All it takes is common sense and a good antigen.
