Hi all....
Three weeks ago today, I endured 6 hours of surgery, and 6 hours in the
recovery room (receiving 2 units of blood which I lost during surgery).
One week ago tomorrow, that *%#@ catheter came out, and I thought that I had
indeed been given my life back! The path report came back with the great news
that the cancer was contained within the prostate, with zero margins, and
absolutely no indication of cancer spread to any other tissue or lymph nodes.
In the 6 days since removal of the cathether, I've had the great luck of being
99% continent! I've been wearing one guard per day, just as a precaution, and
with the exception of yesterday, would dispose of a pad with miminal spotting
from urine 'drips'. Yesterday, I took my first 1.3 mile 'walk around the
block', and I think between the walk, and sitting/being idle at the computer a
bit too long in the a.m., the increased activity might have been the cause of
some increased leakage. But I'm doing my Kegels, and I'm quite pleased with
myself at this point.
Each night, I'm waking up fewer and fewer times to get up and pee - Last night
I only got up twice, as opposed to last Thursday night (day 1 without the
foley), when I got up almost every hour to hit the bathroom. And when I do
have to pee, well, I pee like the proverbial race horse! I'm also practicing
'stopping and starting' during urination.
Here comes the best part. I awoke this morning with an uncomfortable pressure
in my briefs.... I had an erection! Granted, it went away almost
immediately upon my realization of the fact that it was there, but it WAS
there! Honest! LOL AND, I just had a second one while looking at some porn
(hey, I'm alone recuperating here.... LOL). This one lasted longer that the
one from this morning, and damn, it felt GOOD!!!!! Does this mean that the
nerve-sparing was a success,,,, or were these erections 'just a fluke' ???
So,,, what's my problem, you may ask? As good as I feel I have it, what's with
the damn urine that seems to want to stay within the length of my penis????
No matter how I might squeeze, 'milk', or tug, there's always several drops
that want to remain inside. I'm guessing this is normal.
Thank for your opinions, suggestions, and such.... (man, I love this group!)

You mean, they stay inside until you put the penis back in your pants,
at which point they dribble down into your undershorts? I was
basically continent from the word go, or at least as much so as can be
expected. I did have two accidents while in a dead-tired sleep a few
weeks after the catheter came out, but other than that I was able to
control my urination EXCEPT for the kind of dribbling that you
describe. All I can say is it gradually got better. Last Sunday when
it was cold outside, and in the excitement of MSU losing its basketball
game to Purdue, I had the old slightly-damp undershorts syndrome
again. Every now and then it comes back, usually associated with
being cold and tired, or cold and excited. It's not a very serious
problem, though, and does seem that the intervals between these events
keep getting longer and longer.

Great news Rus! We went through our procedures on the same day. Seems
longer than three weeks ago. Time flies when you're having fun I guess :)

Hi Bob....
You know, you're absolutely right - 'our' surgeries seem SO long ago - it's
amazing! It most definately does help to not live in the past - live for today
and plan just in case there's a tomorrow.
I was never one for a major belief in prayer, but with all my family, friends,
inlaws and outlaws telling me how much they were praying for me during "this
time", well, I think I have to believe!
Getting better every day here, and hope (and pray) that you are as well!
LIVE!

Leonard Evens may have posted the sad truth about this some time
ago when he reported:
"No matter how much you shake and dance, the last few drops
go down your pants."
Perhaps we should just see it as a little reminder of how lucky we
are to still be alive.

before I could type this reply.....
Thank you for your great words of wisdom!

It's all but stopped me from wearing my light gray suit.

My dad told me one from the WWII era that might apply to us RRP-ers with
less to work with now (except the "young" part):
"Young bucks with short horns, stand close."

Signature
Wake
Age 58
PSA 3.8
Biopsy positive 5% in 1 of 10 cores
Gleason 3+3
T1c
RRP 1/12/04
Pathology agrees with biopsy
Negative margins

Here's one a friend of mine posted above the urinal in the
men's room at a flying club:
"Pilots with short stacks and/or low manifold pressure,
please taxi forward."

I should add that this ditty is not specifically for RP verterans. It
reflects a common experience of older men.

I have that also, but really have not thought about it because of still
being incontinent six months after the surgery, i.e., with the pads who
cares.
And I second your sentiment about the group. A great bunch of people
here. They have given me a lot of help and support in the last year.
Thank you, and congratulations on your rapid recovery.

Hey Man, handshake in order.....just wash your hands after milking! I have
to laugh.
You are fine! Great News. I was continent the day they took out the tube,
but Mr. Happy didn't wake for 2 years.
I had to slap him around a bit, pump him, inject him, and after 2 years of
struggling.....Voila!
Mr. Happy stands proud.....He even salutes with 25 mgs of viagra....
Wonders of modern medical science.
Glad to hear your story, and do keep us updated.
Friends that have concerns.

After my RRP in Feb-2002, I was continent from the moment the catheter
was removed (for which I'm thankful). However, for the next couple of
months, I kept having the feeling I was leaking, especially when
seated. Nothing actually leaked out of the penis, it just felt like it
was. The feeling just gradually went away on its own.
Glad everything else is going well.
Cheers,
Larry

Congrats Rus!
Great news. Especially the pathology reports.
I hope your erections are better than ever :) just be grateful nothing
happened with the catheter in (lol). The drips will go away sonner than you
think.

try squeezing behind the scrotum to clear the urethra...someone here
suggested that and it seems to work.
